Has WN Ever Dropped Service To An Airport?

Thu Dec 30, 2004 12:23 am

Has Southwest operated regular commercial service in/out of an airport then later discontinued it? I believe I am correct that WN discontinued service in/out of Denver when Stapleton was closed and DIA replaced it. Didn't WN also serve Newburg/Stewart Airport in NYS for a while too, then discontinued service there?

I believe they dropped SFO because of the delays there.

It dropped service to San Francisco a few years ago due to congestion and weather, which hurt its quick turns and affected its schedule. They still serve the Bay Area via San Jose and Oakland.

No, you are incorrect. WN dropped DEN in the late 70s or early 80s, long before the new DIA was built.

Didn't WN also serve Newburg/Stewart Airport in NYS for a while too, then discontinued service there?

No.

TxAgKuwait is correct. The only two markets that WN has completely pulled out of are Beaumont/Port Arthur and Denver. BPT was dropped in the late 70s or early 80s because of its size and proximity to Houston. DEN was dropped around the same time due to heavy delays at Stapleton and poor relations with government officials.

WN moved from DET to DTW, and recently dropped service at SFO to focus on SJC and OAK. They also abandoned IAH early on to focus their Houston operation at HOU, but resumed their DAL-IAH service soon thereafter.

Correction about DTW, DTW was started prior to DET roughly a year earlier, they ran both at the same time for close to 5 years! They pulled the plug on DET when the city was unable to deliver on promises and improvements to the airport. WN did indeed start DTW first (6-4-87) and ran DET from July 1988 to September 1993

TXAg,
Glad to see that I am not one of the few people in the world who knew Southwest came into BPT. I remember flying them as a kid to see my aunt in Dallas. Anyways, we have not had steady service to Dallas in quite sometime, so maybe Southwest will start up again!! Totlly off the subject, but have they ever thought of serving Mexico from Houston or LA?

Later,
J

TxAg,

Hope you had a good holiday. You've been missed here...

Now that you've surfaced  Big grin I (and probably others here) are wondering about your thoughts on the recent SWA/ATA deal for some MDW gates, a hangar there, and the code share arrangement...

BTW, one of the IND papers said a former SWA exec was coming to help ATA get things in order; any idea who it is?

TexAg has the right list of WN dropped cities but don't forget the Morris Air technicality.

When Morris was fully merged into Southwest several cities were dropped: Fresno, Colorado Springs, Eugene, Laughlin, Palm Springs, Denver, and Anchorage. So although they were never officially Southwest cities, Southwest did drop them.  Big grin

Are you speaking of a market that Southwest has served and then dropped? If so, it would certainly have been a market WN inherited with the acquisition of Morris Air and dropped soon after the merger.

There is no chance (IMHO) that Southwest will ever give a thought to serving (or resuming service at) Jackson, WY. Would not support the number of frequencies required by WN, a highly seasonal destination, and a prime "sell to the rich and grow poor" market that WN prefers to leave to the legacies who are enamored by service to trendy markets.

Wasn't that the question asked of the original poster or have I misread it?

I think the original question was in the context of cities that SWA started and later stopped, so leaving Morris out of it (since SWA didn't "start" those cities), the cities that SWA has dropped are listed in TxAg's reply (#5).

Back in the 1980s (86 or 87), SWA did operate into JAC, but it was Saturday charter service during one ski season. The routes were HOU-JAC-HOU and LAX-JAC-LAX. I jumpseated on it one time HOU-JAC, and they out on the JAC-LAX flight, and it was a nice ride and the scenery was breathtaking. Place was a bear to get into when it was snowing...
