Who Are The Top 10 Airlines In The US?

Thu Dec 30, 2004 11:27 am

Does anyone know who the biggest airlines are in the US. I have seen very different lists of the largest airlines and I was wondering if someone could clarify this. I would like to know who the top 10 airlines in America are. I don't know how they figure this. Is it passengers per year or revenue?

The top six remain AA, UA, DL, NW, CO, and WN. 7-10 are in flux, and promise to change substantially by the end of 2005. With America West's and AirTran's growth, Alaska's stability, and the decline of US and TZ, it will be interesting to see how things sort themselves out.
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

I believe not, Future 757. I can only confirm right now that UA is currently the biggest airline in the world right now, or second behind BA. UA is the biggest U.S. airline, followed by AA. I think DL is the third largest, CO is the fourth largest, NW is fifth, and WN is sixth. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thrust: Consider yourself corrected. The airlines, in order of size in the US are:

AA, UA, DL, NW, CO, WN, US, HP, AS, TZ

To quote American Airlines, from their own website:

"About American Airlines
American Airlines is the world's largest carrier. American, American Eagle and the AmericanConnection® regional carriers serve more than 250 cities in over 40 countries with more than 3,800 daily flights. The combined network fleet numbers more than 1,000 aircraft. American's award- winning Web site, AA.com, provides users with easy access to check and book fares, plus personalized news, information and travel offers.

American Airlines is a founding member of the oneworldsm Alliance, which brings together some of the best and biggest names in the airline business, enabling them to offer their customers more services and benefits than any airline can provide on its own. Together, its members serve more than 575 destinations in 135 countries and territories. American Airlines and American Eagle are units of the AMR Corporation (NYSE: AMR - News)."

And to quote United Airlines, from their own website:

"United Airlines (OTCBB: UALAQ.OB) is the world's second largest airline, operating more than 3,500 flights a day on United, United Express and Ted to more than 200 U.S. domestic and international destinations from its hubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Chicago and Washington, D.C. With key global air rights in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe, United is the largest international carrier based in the United States.* United is also a founding member of Star Alliance, which provides connections for our customers to more than 700 destinations in more than 130 countries worldwide. United's nearly 62,000 employees reside in every U.S. state and in many countries around the world. You can find the ranking in term of RPKs of the world's top 20 airlines at http://www.atwonline.com/stats_top25.cfm

For US airlines the ranking is indeed AA, UA, DL, NW, CO, WN, US and HP.
NW and CO have almost the same number of RPKs, so it would be interesting to see if CO can pull ahead of NW in the future.
If you see rankings based on number on planes, number of flights or number of domestic passengers the rankings will be quite different, but RPKs are usually considered best to rank airlines.

Thrust,

As has been suggested before, please do a little homework before making a statement that UA is the biggest airline in the world. Where did you come up with that idea? Try google!!!

P.S.: I would like to know the rankings of #11 through #25 in the US, if anyone has it available.

UA was biggest prior to AA merger with TWA.... also, Chapter 11 has put them a bit further behind.

There are so many different ways to define "largest airline", but in terms of pax carried, it is Southwest.

The question of who is largest and based on what criteria comes up every few months. The most commonly-accepted and acknowledged criteria used by the industry is based on RPMs/RPKs. To that end, the above listing of AA, UA, DL, NW, CO, WN, US, HP is correct. Sometimes, the number of passengers carried is used as the yardstick by some, in which case, WN is #1, followed by DL.
