Il-96M Vs. A340 Or 777?

Fri Dec 31, 2004 6:20 am

I was reading about the Il-96M and was wondering if this aircraft is comparable to any western aircraft. Does it out perform any or is it just an improved design on an old Russian airliner (Il-96-300)

Are their any plans for any new Russian aircraft to be launched to compete with Airbus or Boeing? Could Ilyushin ever compete with the big boys?

IL-96

range: 7.500-11.800 Km
pax regular: 270
fuel burn: 11.18 l/km
Speed: 880 KM/h
price: 75.000.000
Freight: 13.235

777-200ER

Range: 10.730-16.870
pax regular: 370
fuel burn: 10.34l/km
Speed: 890 km/h
price: 160.500.000
Freight:17.810

A340-300X

Range: 10.440-15.600 km
Pax regular: 320
fuel burn: 9.38 l/km
speed: 890 km/h
price: 156.000.000
freight: 16.930

As you can see the 777 almost burns 1 l/km less fuell than the IL-96 with 100 pax more!!!! that is a really big difference. Also the same goes for the A340. also the freight and range are superior over the IL-96. The main reasons why Russian airlines choose the IL-96 is Russian government presure , and you can buy 2 IL-96 for the price of 1 777 and still have 10 milion left.

if there will be a new plane soon? yes , for sure, the russian government want to put all the russian manufactors together to produce better products, so just 1 manufactor. imagine that if Yakolev, Illusian, Tupolev, antonov etc work together they will make a better product, but still don't think they can compete with the western products...

No... the A330, A340, 777, and 7E7 all blow the IL-96M away in terms of range and payload. It's better than the IL-96-300, but still doesn't cut the cake the Airbus/Boeing long-haulers do.

Are their any plans for any new Russian aircraft to be launched to compete with Airbus or Boeing?

None that compete (much) with anything in the Airbus/Boeing line-up. The Sukhoi RRJ might be the most likely Russian aircraft to catch-on outside of the ex-Soviet Union, but it would compete mostly with Embraer and it's heavily influenced by Boeing/Snemca partnership.

Could Ilyushin ever compete with the big boys?

Probably not without major investment. They lack the global support infastructure required for an airline to even considering their product.

From those specs above, 270 passengers is that for the current Il-96-300 in service or the IL-96-400/M? I would think the 2nd one seats over 300...

I flew an IL-96 with SU SVO-PVG-SVO last year. It reminded me of soviet times. Not even close to competitive with western aircraft.

Well if you can buy one for half the price of a 777, it starts to become a good proposition despite the increased burn...

Not that western pax would take kindly to the name "Ilyushin"...

Lots of things to consider, IMHO. It is cheap, but production is slow. It is easier to maintain due to simplicity, but try getting a spare engine in Cleveland. The old Aeroflot interior was awful, terribly small seat pitch. The new should be ok, with lie-flat beds in first class. Not very fuel economical, but cheap, cheap, cheap to buy. Western customers might not like the name "Ilyushin," but they didn't like Airbus at first either. If anything, if the price is right, people just don't care. Its a handsome aircraft.......

We'll see about that in the next 10 - 20 years. *hint*hint*Su-31*hint*

The IL-96M uses Western engines (PW2000), avionics and certain systems, not Russian. I worked on the hydraulic pumps - they are the same model as the A330/340.

So finding a spare engine in Cleveland should not be a challenge, but finding the right socket to remove the bolts .....  Smile

I might be missing something here but I thought the IL96M program was stopped at least four years ago. Only the IL96-300 is still in production. The IL96M actually never passed the prototype phase.

SAA-SAL, you are absolutely correct! Rockwell-Collins repo'ed the equipment probably under pressure from the US government on behalf of Boeing/MDC. The prototype goes to airshows, but thats about it.....the production version is still the IL-96-300. If there was actual interest, one could probably get it with foreign equipment.....

Interesting .... is this just speculation on your part, or is there some kind of evidence?
