Well, Hawaiin was in lots of trouble for awhile there too... Didn't even hear this was a possibility but I guess not really surprising since they pretty much duplicate what Hawaiin does, but evidently just not as well.

I always saw this as a possibility since Sept. 11 happened. AQ also had been losing a lot of money for the past year. It really became apparent that they were very close to filing when it was publically known a few months ago that they were looking to sell their cargo and contract service ops and a few days before Christmas AQ was asking for approximately 20+% wage cuts from their employees.

I was actually quite surprised that they said that the flights to KWA and MAJ were unprofitable. I was told by an AQ manager that the flights made lots of money flying cargo/excess and overweight bags because the pax would bring back all kinds of things from HNL since it is cheaper or just not available.

I was surprised when they sold off Island Air. Supposedly Island Air was a profitable operation. That was my indication that things weren't so rosey at AQ.

I wonder if this Ch 11 reorg will play into a 732 fleet replacement.

Also, how does this filing affect the ATSB loan. Are there any special provisions or requirements if a borrowing airline files Ch. 11? For some reason, I thought that AQ had paid off their ATSB loan already.

I flew an AQ 732 KOA to HNL on the 30th. How old are these birds? Any plan to replace them anytime soon (notwithstanding the chapter 11 filing)?

With this filing, we could see a re-structuring of AQ in its organizational and operational structures.

I'm surprised frequency to mainland cities have not increased, since it's the profitable area of AQ. Early morning departures out of Hawaii to the mainland would be nice to see, that way arrivals would be in the afternoon. instead of current evening arrivals.

If the cargo ops is sold off (though no major player has surfaced), that may answer the question of the 732 replacement.

Aloha has paid off about half of the ATSB guaranteed loan. They haven't said what their bk financing arrangements are, but they have to work with the ATSB:

With AQ in BK(CH11) does anyone thing WN will go in for the kill and make a fire sale purchase of AQ's assets. It would be a very fast way for WN to dramatically expand in a new market

Sad news....

I hope things pull up for them. Kind of ironic how they were hiring flight attendants a couple of months back  Sad

Hey jetMARC!~

How are those 3 2-day transcons coming along? Man! I would be burned out just after one trip like that! Phew!

I'll be calling you on my drive to DEN on Sunday...of course, unless you're flying! I hope all is well.

Happy New Year everyone!

Cheers Mariner!

Bluewave 707...

If a flight leaves Hawaii at 700a, it does not arrive in LA until 230p or so. When it leaves LAX at 330p, it will arrive back in Hawaii at 730p. Thats about the tightest you can schedule it, but leaving at 700a blows all of your outer island cxns into the mainland.... Sometimes it is better to run the flight into the West coast in the evening and overnight it.

or even make better aircraft utilization by turning some flights into red-eye flights. if they timed it right...they could even add an addt'l frequency to a cpl of their mainland flights.

It said in the news articles that they were going to evaluate aircraft utilization and timings of their mainland flights with the aim of "adding additional slots in some cities."

Hopefully so, I personally would like to see some red-eyes from HNL-OAK/SNA. They could increase their mainland flights by 1/3 if they did some creative scheduling w/ redeyes (3 oneways per aircraft per day instead of 2).

They just hired 24 more flight attendant in late October, and at that interview (my aunty applied) they indicated that they would be hiring more soon and were stretched pretty thin in that department at the moment. I guess they need more F/A's to operate the mainland flights than the interisland flights.

I'm excited to see the STRONGER, BETTER ALOHA emerge from Ch. 11 in a few months.

Aloha and Good Luck!

Hope they pull through.

And a WN purchase of AQ would really piss me off. Southwest is nothing compared to the quality of Aloha Airlines.

Umm, nobody said that AQ was liquidating. That would be Chapter 7. And for the umpteenth time, WN isn't going to go into the Hawaii market in the foreseeable future. It's been discussed to death- do a search.

They also make money... which is something AQ should try  Big grin

WN has a good deal on their plate right now, taking a stake in a second bankrupt carrier is probably not their cup of tea. WN is probably waiting for US to croak, and as long as they have room to grow in the contiguous 48 states, they won't enter new markets like Hawaii

I think you will see WN code share with AQ and ATAH on flights to Hawaii.. You also might see ATAH code share with AQ on inter island flights.. This would be big money for all three airlines.ws

AA has a morning departure out of HNL, flight 270 HNL-LAX, 830a departure, arriving LAX at 3:40p.

You will not see WN codeshare with anyone else anytime soon. I even doubt TZ would codeshare with AQ since TZ flies non-stop to all but two of the major islands and most of ther pax are flying on packages sold by tour operators.

WN gets a strong foothold into the Hawaiian Market with their new agreement with TZ, no need to code share with AQ as well, even less need to acquire them.

UA has two flights from HNL in the morning ... 934 to LAX, and 058 to SFO. With AAH482 now scheduled for 1300, a morning flight around 0900 woud be feasible, even if if pax wanted to connect from a Neighbor Island. They could do the same with OAK.

As far as red-eyes to SNA, it is a noise-restricted airport with ops ending @ 2300, and resuming @ 0700 for aircraft producing more than 86db either landing or taking-off. Also, AAH482 contiunues onto RNO, and overnights there, and returns as AAH481 arriving @ SNA around 0730, so AQ could have the red-eye leave SNA in the afternoon.

We shall see what AQ does with their mainland service. With inter-island service there may be a consolidation of flights reducing flights to/from each Neighbor Island.

I read this morning in the WSJ that part of the problem was that the other airlines that compete with AQ (Hawaiian, United, etc.) had filed for bankruptcy and could therefore cut costs further. Until now, AQ did not have that possibility.
