2005 Job Growth?

Sat Jan 01, 2005 6:16 am

I have a question and no, I do not work for the airlines so I don't know what the growth rate in the Aviation Industry holds for the next 12months like some of you might. I came across this website http://www.pilotswanted.com/ and it seems to be very helpful as to helping pilots land a job. The "Mission Statement" states that 10,000 new jobs for pilots were created in 2004 and 11-12,000 will be created for 2005. How true is this statement? It states the CO and NW are recalling pilots and that WN, FX, 5X, HP, FL and B6 will hire in record numbers in 2005. I also got in a conversation with a customer at my job that works for a major domestic carrier and he told me that he heard Southwest will be hiring around 600-700 new pilots next yr. I also notice that on southwest.com/careers they are accepting applications for pilots now. Has this always been open for pilots to apply? Thanks for any replies.

While the airlines are indeed hiring a good deal right now, you also have to keep in mind what the labor pool is like right now for pilots. Most pilots that are being hired right now are ones that were laid off from other carriers. Minimum flight time requirements for hiring airlines are usually not nearly enough to get an interview, let alone secure a job. From what I understand, you need much higher times to even get your foot in the door.

Not that many in the UK though. Ryanair for example recruit via an agency.
