Nationwide Airlines - Still Flying Bac 111 & 721?

Sun Jan 02, 2005 3:34 pm

Does anyone know if Nationwide Airlines are still flying their 727-100s or Bac 1-11s?

I'm pretty sure that the 1-11s are all out, not quite sure about the 721s but I think they have, by now, met the same fate.

I think they are all parked at Lanseria.

According to their website, they operate B727s, B737s and a B767 - the BAc-1-11 seems to be out: actually, they began retiring those quite a while ago (in 2000 a CE sales-rep told me that those would be gone soon), so I'd be very surprised if they were still around.

I suppose that they're probably using the B727-200s mainly on the JNB-CPT or JNB-DUR routes, depending on the required capacity - I doubt that the -200s go to PLZ or GRJ too often... I wouldn't be surprised if they kept the -100s primarily for charters or backup, but it's really been to long since I've had contact directly with them, so I'm not sure: but this setup was what they were planning for around 2000/2001.

In August 2004 they did operate 727. I think they only use the 722 and no more the 721.

According to SA006, they still fly the B721. He apparently booked himself on it for a flight fairly soon.

They do still fly the 721 (ZS-NYY) to some destinations like GRJ and DUR, though randomly.

Interesting - Thanks for the replies. So I guess to summarise:

* The Bac 1-11's are gone.
* The 727-100s are used from time to time.

I will be in Sth Africa in September this year, and am trying to gauge what 'joy' flights I will do.

I might try writing to the airline a little closer to the time and see if I can get hold of someone in scheduling who can give me the heads-up as to the 721's ops.

Thanks again,
MD

Hi,

The BAC1-11's were withdrawn from service due to operational limitations (If I recall properly these were required to be retired from service due to the CAA). There are many standing at Lanseria (FALA) in a very derilect condition - most probably will never fly again.

The backbone of the NTW fleet is B732's, and several B722's. I know there is one B721, ZS-NYY which is a 1966(!!!) model - I don't know what service life is left there...
