Pan-pan-pan Hawker N173TR

Mon Jan 03, 2005 6:49 am

Hawker N173TR en-route Farmingdale (FRG) to St.Maarten (SXM) calling Pan Pan Pan at 2128z with New York on 11330KHz, smoked filled cockpit, requesting immediate diversion to nearest airport (New York advises MBGT - Grand Turk). 5660 lbs of fuel, 4 SOB and 3hrs endurance. Position 51nm north of KRAFT, heading 183, flight level 350, M.76.

Requesting immediate fire assistance on arrival Grand Turk.

New York oceanic has patched through New York centre and they're both frantically trying to get in contact but no luck.

Contact lost at 2140z.

New York transmitting blind advising if flight can hear him to squawk 7700.

 Sad

Showing on the tracker now as heading for MBPV (Provinciales) rather than Grand Turk and descending through FL166 as I write.

Looks like they'll make it okay.

The pilot had his oxygen mask on after his first transmission.

Cheers,

Yes..there flight plan was well offshore and they are required to have over water gear (I don't have the FAR near me). There is nothing that can happen to a pilot worse then smoke in the cockpit (well thats per my judgement). When I was first reading this thread there was a Captain standing behind me. Though annoying, he was telling me all the things that they would be going through. Its not like my Cessna when I can just open the window  Smile). Well we have yet to hear bad news and that probably the best news of the day. "No news is good news".

I hope this is correct. FAR91.509 covers the survival equipment required for flight over water, and 91.511 is for the radio requierments.
