GM Saab 2000s

Mon Jan 03, 2005 11:28 pm

I looked on flytecomm.com for DTW and saw this today...

Airline General Motors Corporation
Flight Number 206
Departure City (Airport) Shreveport, LA (SHV)
Departure Time 01/03/2005 08:10 AM
Arrival City (Airport) Detroit, MI (DTW)
Arrival Time 01/03/2005 11:33 AM
Remaining Flight Time 02:23 (planned)
Aircraft Type SB20
Current Altitude 0 feet
Current Groundspeed 0 mph
Flight Status Planned

I assume SB20 is Saab 2000, but I thought GM sold all of their Saab 2000s to Rick Hendrick - NASCAR Hendrick Motorsports (Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart etc).

If GM still has Saab 2000s then where did Hendrick get theirs?

Yes, all three GM Saab 2000 are with Rick Hendrick Racing. I saw the flight plan and really don't understand it. GM has not had these aircraft for 3 years. The only thing I can think of is that one of the RHR planes is still in a GM tail number, and the FAA data base still thinks it's GM. Last year they where with Penski Racing on a short term program, but this past year Hendrick too them over. I have heard 'talk' of more 2000's headed this way for another race team.

...and Tony Stewart is NOT Hendrick Racing.... He's with Joe Gibbs.

If its coming to DTW, I doubt it would be HEndrick Racing this time of year. The only Race owner that I could think of that flies to the Detroit area would be Jack Roush and he keeps his aircraft at YIP (not his 727s, but his Citation and his P-51s).

GM has their aircraft based at DTW and I remember those S2000s before they went to Hendrick always being parked there. At the time they were all white. Perhaps one of GM's Citation X's took a registration of a Saab 2000 and it hasn't been updated on Flytecomm yet.

I guess I was thinking Tony Stewart was with Hendrick because the pilot who died in that Hendrick B-200 crash last fall used to be Stewart's personal pilot so for some reason I linked Stewart with Hendrick.

Not really. They could be headed there for meetings, testing, sponsorship obligations...any number of reasons.

I think it is more likely a GM aircraft though since they are based at DTW and frequently use the airport in and out. Hendrick wouldn't have a scheduled flight number anyway.

Last summer when the Pepsi 400 was at DAB, no NASCAR aircraft were listed on flytecomm that day except the two chartered Champion Air 727s and a PACE 733. None of the driver or team planes were listed.

I have seen flytecomm in the past still have old aircraft listed, most noteably Delta long after they retired the L1011 still showing it on MCO's flytecomm schedule even though they been using a 764 for a long time.
