PHX Terminal 2 Why Is It Different Than The Others

Tue Jan 04, 2005 5:51 am

My family where leaving after a long visit out of PHX to DCA on usairways. The original booking was on Delta round trip.. supposed to go back on the 10th, but because an emergency happened it was much cheaper to buy a one way ticket on USairways rather than all the change fees and increase in fare and here is what happened. The USairways flight leaves at 6:45am, we get there by 4:35, no body was at the ticket counter, and the line was backed up. United and Alaska airlines in addition to continental were open and checking in passengers. Right before 5am, a CSR from United came to the USairways waiting passengers and demanded that the passengers should re-form the long line at the other end. Alright, SO I understand that she was trying to remove the already frustrated passengers from in front of united, eventhough they were waiting to check in at USairways, and redirect them to form the same congestion in front of Alaska airlines? Every body started ignoring her and even one passenger said "Ma'am, it is not going to work out because people are already standing in line and what you are asking us to do would create a great chaos" she finally said " I don't care" then another passenger said "maybe you might as well forget it, your authority is at United's check in, not at the other parts of the airport", now what kind of logic was that? Finally USairways personnel showed up, and told her that the line is going to disappear soon.

Now why is it that terminal 2 in sky harbor different than terminal 3 and 4. 3 and 4 has a lot of facilities, more convenient to the customers, and offer more convenience. Terminal 2 is always backed up with security lines, checkin. and did that person from united had the right to tell other airlines passengers (as long as they are minding their own business and not interfering with UNited's passengers) to re-form a line again at some where else (eventhough with the current events, I'd prefer United over Usairways)?

Terminal 2 is a pretty antiquated terminal as far as customer convenience is concered. The ticket counter space is minimal, so if there is a backup at one airline it interferes with another airlines ticketing space. The backage claim area is also very small, and its havoc when more than two full flights arrive at the same time. I was there on December 23 when two United and one Continental flights arrived at the same time and it was a nightmare.

Terminal 2 dates back to the early 60's. Terminal 3 was completed in 1979 and Terminal 4 in 1990. My suggesion is that they add two concourses - one each to the north side and southside of T3 and move the T2 airlines over to T3 and bulldoze T2.

As far as a United employee getting upset at USAirways passengers, I'm not too sure about that.

Couldn't United employees have heledp USAirways passengers since they are both STAR alliance?

i don't think United employees could have helped because a lot of passengers held tickets issued by united but (operated by USairways) so they had to stand in line for USairways. if United couldn't help these passengers, then i don't think they could have helped regular USairways passengers who booked it with USairways

Terminal 2 was built when prop planes were the dominant aircraft in the sky. That building is not part of the master plan for Sky Harbor, so it is not designed for greater volumes of passengers and traffic of today. As far as the UA agent, her demeanor, if as you described it, is part of the dislike for the human race which some people display naturally. There are an awful lot of very dedicated employees at UA worldwide. This one grumpy woman should not be representative of thousands of caring employees at United Airlines.

T2 originally opened in 1962 (and was the state of the art back then). As a comparison T3 opened in 1979 and T4 in 1990.

Landside T2 hasn't really changed all that much but the concourse has been expanded and enlarged over the years being fully built out to its current setup in the late 1980s. The USAirways gate area at the end of T2 being the newest part. In general T2 is the easiest terminal to get into and out of. Short walks from the curb to ticketing to security to the gate and back out. T3 and T4 at their busiest can be worse than T2 on any given day.

For the longest time, at least since my family moved to Az in 1991, T2 has shown its limitations but air traffic and pax levels have really just finally reached the point where it needs to be replaced. It looks like the new control tower should be completed soon. Once that is done and the old tower comes down I suspect we will hear more about the new terminal that will replace both T2 and T3. If I were a betting man I would expect to see a structure similair to T4 incorporating improvements learned from 15 years of operations @ T4.

not just at the airline industry, but at other industries, you can see a lot of people who will authorize themselves and give themselves the right to do something like what she did, just to improve an insecurity. from my understanding, in the USA, people are so tidy about forming lines, and I couldn't imagine Chaos as described. was there any other United Employees who supported her action? if not, then she is one of the few bad apples, and those are present in every airline and every industry.

FWIW, Terminal 2 is probably the most convenient for customer and passenger access, IMHO. It's easy to park, walk into the building, and get to your gate (provided the TSA line isn't a wreck - which it can be at ALL the Terminals).

very true, very true. When I was working at HP in PHX, and we had late flights up the wazoo. TSA was all backed up ALL the time, and pax were just downright nasty (much like this past holiday season). The lines were backed all the way to the food court upstairs of HP Ticketing (on the West entry) and on the East side all the way around to the escalators. Yeah, THAT was fun.  Yeah sure

While Terminal 2 is antiquated compared to the newest terminals, its a dream for those of us that want to get in and get out. Parking is right there. From ticket to security is the shortest walk in Phoenix. Security is always a breeze, I've never had a wait there. Yeah, the shops and restaraunts are limited but since everyone complains about the prices, what's the big deal? I just wish there was a Starbucks.  Smile

Also, if you go to the far end of the concourse, its a great place to watch the arrivals or departures on the south runways..

fly_emirates, do you really want to open that can of worms about US Airways being around?

I have to say that I have flown out of each PHX terminal several times and find T3 the best by far. I have never waited more than five minutes in a security line and two days before Thanksgiving there was no wait on either side for security, plus it's bright and new in appearance if not in actuality. I have to agree though that parking across from T2 is convienient, but I usually just hop the shuttle or walk over to T3 from the T2 garage. It's still less time than waiting in the T2 line!
