AirTran In DFW

Tue Jan 04, 2005 7:12 am

What are AirTran's future plans in DFW? It seems everything westbound did poorly, whereas the ATL flight and Florida flights seemed to do OK. More East Coast flights? West Coast pull down? Nothing at all? What's the story?

A 2nd DFW-MCO run begins in February. FL was sidetracked in trying to acquire ATAs gates, etc at MDW, but now may take another look at expanding DFW.

Are they doing as expected or better/worse? It seems to me that they, along with a few other carriers who I won't mention, have had less than stellar success with new focus cities.

"Whats up with Air Tran at both sides of the Airport?"

AirTran is on one side of the airport, Terminal B, gates 13-16.

As far as performance, both LAX roundtrips are nearly full today, both ways. Both LAS-DFW flights are full as well. DFW-FLL has been cancelled indefinitely due to poor loads.

We're still in the tail end of the holiday peak.

"DFW-FLL has been cancelled indefinitely due to poor loads"

Didn't even notice....surprising. So I guess the Florida routes weren't doing so hot either. Sounds like only the ATL route is doing well.

Vulindela744,

I work in Passenger Movement in SOC for AirTran and as sure as I'm sitting here looking at both the FliteTrac Plot and Openskies....there is no longer a FLL-DFW or DFW-FLL flight in our system. As far as the other day, darn near everything was full. Our load factor had been pushing 90% everyday prior to today for the past 2-3 weeks.

19:31 03JAN/ATLDFW 2245/0007:FL 109(C8)>ldfwfll
Flights not found

The above command shows I'm trying to load flights from DFW to FLL...the result shows on the second line.

DFW-FLL and one of two DFW-LAS are being dropped this month but both flights return in February.

This is a mystery! Ever since MDW fell through, I've been trying to guess where they are going with all of these jets on order that were going to be able to take over most of the MDW operation within 6 months (according to their press release). Slow time of the year or not, I can't see FL pulling down any frequency from DFW if they were going to try to make it into some type of focus city or hub. Especially if you are trying to gain some AA customers that want frequency, not one flight a day. They have to have something else on the drawing board. The only guess I have is that they are waiting for some potential developement at USAir, but even at that, what are you doing with the aircraft being pulled from DFW and the once "new" MDW flights that have been canned? The only new flights I've seen recently are PHF-TPA, MDW-MCO and all of this time another 5 or so aircraft have arrived since the initial MDW announcement.

I think Air Tran would do well at DFW if the connection opportunities were improved...but that'll take time.

That's just my point. If they are looking to improve connection opportunities, why pull down the frequency and see customers leave in the short run and have to lure them back later.

I'm starting to think it's not going to happen at DFW.

AirTran doesn't have the luxury of the Uniteds and Americans of flying routes that are only booked 1/4 full "just to hold the route on the map". Any vast amounts of open seats will definitely show in the financial results... you will be seeing a lot of conservative moves coming from Kevin Healy's office in the next couple of months as they plot FL's track.

I hope I'm wrong, but the only conservative move that comes to mind would be to delay delivery of aircraft and that would be a huge mistake. The competition would take those jets and use them against FL.

There are several routes that currently have high fares from DFW because of the AA monopoly. DFW-LAX was one of them until FL started service on that route. Others that could really use some competition are BOS, LGA, DCA, STL, SAN, SEA, SFO..........I think Airtran could do well if they simply started opening up these routes. DFW pax are starting to get fed up with AA and the DFW airport with the whole Wright ammendment mess.

"DFW-LAX was one of them until FL started service on that route."

I think the problem is that FL lowers the fares, and everyone continues to fly AA in droves, who is now competing with the lower FL fares. It's the "Thanks, (your favorite LCC here) for entering the market; now I can continue to get miles on (your favorite legacy here) AND fly for less money!" syndrome.

I was thinking the same thing maverick. Until FL has a stronger presence in DFW, their Freq Flyer program will not be attractive. I know WN's rapid rewards program is better than legacy miles programs. How does FL's plan compare?

True - look at CVG. A low fare airline arrives with one or two destinations, DL matches the fare and the customers say thank you to the LCC for making their DL flight cheaper.

I was wondering...do they have any extra heavy checks coming up? I would venture to guess yes so they can get things ready for the Spring Break travel season. Remember, Easter is in late March which is fairly early (ok really early) so they might be making sure the planes are ready for the peak Spring season. As far as reducing flights out of DFW, like someone else said, it's only temporary because I was looking in March and all flights are in there.

As to the question where are all of these planes going? They've got a plan and I expect we will get to know more soon. I would venture to say that they will continue to connect the dots and relieve pressure off of ATL. Some cities like FNT, RDU, JAX all have their added flight to ATL in the schedule like they've had for the past few years. I would like to see FL fly DFW - DEN and maybe ICT out west and out east I'd like them to fly MEM, CAK, DAY, BOS,etc. I would suspect you'll see a few more western cities open up in probably SEA and PHX and maybe one or 2 out east (we know of at least one rumor). The west coast cities will open when they get their long haul costs inline with what they had anticipated. I don't expect FL to defer their deliveries at all, infact, I expect them to continue to do what they do best, jump on an opportunity when they get one and stay on a cautious offensive.

Maybe they are just waiting to see what happens at USAir. It looks to me like the MDW failure has opened some eyes to the difficulty of buying things out of bankruptcy court. I believe that Southwest had their mind made up that they were not going to be outbid by anyone. I don't know if there is any type of iron clad arrangement to lock up a purchase in bankruptcy, but if FL seriously wants an asset, I don't know if you can wait to pick up bargains in the court. Everyone has the same idea and the guy with the biggest checkbook (WN) seems more aggressive these days.
