Ride On An MD90

I apologize if this is the wrong forum, but I didn't know quite where to put this.

Yesterday I was on an MD90 for the first time (quite surprising actually considering that I live in SLC). I noticed that my ride felt considerably different than I am used to: for instance through the departure it didn't feel like we were taking off at all, very smooth and I didn't feel like I was being pushed back into the seat. Then mid-flight, the flight was smooth but I noticed that I had a feeling like I was going up and down almost like a cyclical surge of power every couple seconds. Lastly, it felt as if we powered up on approach every time the flaps were. Is there an explanation for all of this, or is it just me?

First off, let me ask you if you've even flown on an MD-88?

The -90 is a sweet ride overall....you can bairley hear it, even at T/O thrust. The at-cruise movement you're talking about is just something that's a part of Mad Dog life...it's an oscilation (if I remember all this correctly), just small varations in the aircraft's trim (as dictated by the autopilot) and small corrections in throttle position (as dictated by the autothrottles). It's nothing more than just a small up-down feeling. I've been on these things literally hundreds of times, you kind of just get used to it after awhile. Wish there were more 90's!

As for approach...when you have flaps out, you're creating more drag on the airframe as you know...if you left the throttles at idle (which is usually where they are on descent), the drag from the flaps/slats would slow the jet down too much...so at that point, the pilots are putting power back on the plane and giving it juuuust enough power to keep it descending perfectly in that configuration....an oversimplifed explanation but hey  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I've never flown on an MD88, and this was my first time on any MD actually, I'm too used to Airbus, Bombardier/DHC, Boeing, and Embraer Aircraft as well as the occasional tristar, wish I had flown on more of 'em. Thanks for the explanations, I thought it was a nice ride, just felt very different to me.
