Do you know anything about capacity restrictions at MEX and its ability to handle more flights?
According to non-official stats last year MEX
airport reports over 22.5 million pax. AFAIK, MEX
can handle 25M pax in the current terminal.
This year the construction of the new terminal, T2
on the East side will start. This new building will have 26 contact positions and 12 more non-contact positions for a total of 38.
airport currently has 60 positions in which only around 40-45 are contact positions the rest are served with buses (mainly used for domestic flights also). I don't know exactly how many new positions MEX
will later have but I estimate something around 90. With this, MEX
airport will be able to handle around 35M pax a year. More over, some routes and flights will be decentralized and sent to other airports around, TLC (Toluca), QET (new Querétaro airport, second biggest airport in the country), PBC (Puebla), CVJ (Cuernavaca). SCT forecasts to move 50M pax by 2010 in the 5 airports above mentioned including commercial and biz flights.
That's what's going to happen in the near future! We need a new airport but we also need to decentralize some operations. Over 35% of the pax who fly to MEX
fly to other cities. This is, we need to move more operations to GDL
or airlines need to start more direct flights between other mexican cities.
still has a lot of free slots, you might want to check them out here:
Even at peak hours, MEX
still has slots to offer. Maxium number is 60.
