Virgin Atlantic- their routes and aircraft

Thu Jan 06, 2005 12:49 pm

Does Virgin fly anywhere inside europe from man or lhr? OR are they strictly Egland to Destinations in other continents. I assume i am right that the only a/c thay have are widebodies (747, a340---)?

No, they don't. I believe they used to operate to ATH with an A320 until a few years ago.

They have, as you correctly say, B747s and A340s of various types in their fleet.

EDIT: check their website for all the info: http://www.virgin-atlantic.com

Erj145lr that is a correct statement.

Their fleet consists of:

B747-443s (leased from GECAS, planes that were originally intended for AZ before they switched the order to 772ERs)

B747-4Q8s leased from ILFC

B747-41Rs (2 of 3 belonging to VS, the other leased from GECAS)

A340-311s and A340-313Xs, all but 3 belong to them with VAIR, -VELD and VSUN leased from ILFC.

A340-642s, all belonging to VS

Regarding the 747 Classics, I think only G-VSSS was in service for the MAN-MCO route, but has that now been switched over to a 744?

Anyway, here are VS destinations:

Antigua
Barbados
Boston
Cape Town
Delhi
Grenada
Hong Kong
Johannesburg
Kuala Lumpur
Lagos
Las Vegas
London
Los Angeles
Manchester
Miami
New York
Orlando
Port Harcourt
San Francisco
Shanghai
Singapore
St Lucia
Sydney (yea baby!)
Tobago
Tokyo
Washington

By the way, Atlantic is spelled with an A, not an I.

KL is a codeshare with Malaysia metal. Didn't know there was a codeshare to SIN but I guess it makes sense since SQ own half of Virgin.

Also, if including codeshare then you can say they have 1 European route with the Lyon flight.
Purely a codeshare with Air France to keep slots alive as far as I understand but a European destination and bookable on the site!

If you want to include code shares they would fly to loads of european destinations! They codeshare on most of the BD UK/european network.

Ironically though, BD is the BIGGER airline of the two, holding 14% of slots at LHR. Virgin only holds 4% of slots. BA 47%.

There are 2 Classics, one is G-VSSS and the other is G-VBEE (Ext TF-ATE and ATN I think, cant do a search to back this up seen as im on the works network :S both leased from CC anyway). They both operate MAN-MCO-MAN (I think one sometimes did of VS's flights to Nigeria from LGW or LHR?).

Given that they have ordered a bunch of the A340-600's and have ordered the A380......will VS going to go to an all Airbus fleet eventually?

VS will never go all airbus, because they need an aircraft which is in between the A380 and A346. The 747s are definitely more suited to flying the carribean routes, where there is a lot of traffic(for one or two airlines) and require aircraft with lots of seats down the back.
I think the Cape Town route is being transferred to SAA after this year, although VS does not fly the route all year round, so this is probably sensible.

Cheers,
