Busiest US Domestic Route Without Nonstop Service?

Sat Jan 08, 2005 7:57 am

With Song's announcement that they are dropping the 3x daily 757's from BOS-PBI, combined with American pulling their daily MD-80 off the route for the summer season, that will make 606 daily passengers who are now forced to connect through another airport on the route. The question here is, is there another domestic US route with more daily passengers, but no nonstop service?

Not quite 606, but RDU-LAX has 444 daily passengers.. no nonstop.. if you include the adjoining airports of LGB, ONT, BUR.. that makes the total of 550 daily passengers.

PVD-LAX is up there. A little more than 400 pax/day if I recall.

ONT is not exactly adjoining to LAX; it's some 50 miles of bumper-to-bumper I-10 traffic to the east of LAX. Most RDU-ONT pax, I should think, would likely prefer a connecting or 1-stop same plane flight to ONT rather than deal with LAX and I-10 traffic.

I was using the LA World Airport guide.. which includes ONT with LAX. And since LGB and BUR are on either side of LA, I thought they would all be inclusive of the LA area..

Its probably something from LGA or DCA that cannot be served due to the perimeter rules.....

SLC-1250 miles, with a limited number (I believe under a dozen rotations worth) of exceptions. It would be great if somebody could remind me which flights are using those exemptions at present, thanks!

BDL and PVD to LAX are up there. Hartford used to have nonstop with a 738 from AA and years ago with a UA DC-8. Newer jets may allow PVD with 7200' to someday offer it. PVD O&D #s are blunted by BOS spillover but are prob. significantly more in reality. BDL should be picked up eventually.

SHUPirate1, well for one SLC, we weren't excepted for LGA so I didn't realize DCA even had a perimeter restriction

LaGuardia's perimeter is at 1500 miles, except that Denver is grandfathered in due to it being served from LaGuardia before the perimeter rule was instituted. Additionally, the perimeter rule at LaGuardia does not apply on Saturday.

Just out of curiousity, how does one find the information on O&D passengers between city pairs? Is there a website that lists it? I'd love to see it!!

about a year ago I remember reading on this site about this same topic. Someone had all the stats from the DOT and the number one most unserved city pair was BWI to SEA and another in the top ten was SEA-MSY. This was at least a year ago so AS may have started to MSY by now...

I wish UA would run A319's for the LAX-RDU/PVD/BDL. We used to have non-stop service SFO-BDL on the 319 but then we pulled it after 9/11.

By definition, the #1 domestic route within the USA is between:

KOA-LIH That's right, between two Hawaiian islands.

Really. Look it up. I WIN! What's my prize?

Most LGA flights to/from STL continue to LAX on American. Do other airlines...like United have continuing service to the west coast for most of their LGA originating/destination flights?

if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

NYC - SAT 354 passengers a day not including EWR
NYC - AUS 499 passengers a day not including EWR
everytime i fly on this route the flights are packed!!
Prices on these routes are between $300 - $400
Continental offers non-stop service from EWR but for those coming from LGA and JFK they will have to connect

Isn't the first leg of every flight technically considered a non-stop to that destination? Every airport has non-stops to somewhere.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Flyabunch,

Don't understand your point. Of course every flight goes non-stop to somewhere. The question asked for the U.S. busiest domestic ROUTE without non-stop service. If BDL-LAX has no non-stops then that may qualify. If there should be a flight BDL-ORD-LAX that has nothing to do with the question.

My point related to the topic title. I just thought there was at least a little humor in saying that a route has to have a nonstop from somewhere. I do understand the point that on a given route like BDL-LAX, there is no nonstop, but I did think that it was at least a little funny to note that every flight is a non-stop from somewhere. That is why I put the smiley, to denote that I was taking a little liberty with the seriousness of the topic.
