Why Does Easyjet Not Display The Union Jack?

Sat Jan 08, 2005 10:13 am

why does easyjet, a british airline (I think), not display the union jack, yet it displays the flag of the EU?

I guess because EZY is more European than British perhaps? They have easyJet Switzerland well. I guess they want to be known as an European airline rather than a British one?

Just a thought.......

Whilst the A319 fleet does not, there are pictures in the database which show 737's both -300 & -700 with the Union Jack.

I'm not sure if the Union Jack is being replaced by the EU flag or the EU flag will only appear on the A319 fleet.

Perhaps an Easyjet employee might shed some light.....

One (very padantic) point! The flag can only be called Union JACK when on a ship. All other times it is union FLAG.

There was also a case infront of a council planning comittee who ruled that the Union flag could be considered to be a national flag and could be flown by anyone, the European flag was an advert and therefore required planning permission!
Back to topic easyjet was of course started with Greek money.

I assume you are referring to the (tail) design of the aircraft, because they do display the Union Jack (see http://www.airliners.net/open.file/649009/L/ ) next to the registration which is mandatory.
The owner is of Greek descent, maybe that offers a clue why there is no british flag incorporated in the scheme. They dont have the most exciting scheme in aviation, but at least the orange is very unique and distinguishable. Talk about brand value.

F-WWKH, it doesn't seem to be quite so mandatory...

F-WWKH: first, as Intheknow pointed out, when on an aircraft it's called the Union Flag and NOT the Union Jack. Secondly, who said it was mandatory? There are hundreds of British registered aircraft flying around with no sign of a flag anywhere.

I've noticed this too - easyJet are clearly looking to the future (indeed the present) where "Europe" is a single aviation market and they intend to serve all of it - hence the big hubs at Nice, Orly, Schipol, Berlin (SXM) and Dortmund. Why should they fly the Union flag when most of their flights don't start or end within the United Kingdom, and the startup money was Greek? They're barely a British airline, although their origins and their heart is here - they are a true European airline with no particular national bias. Some of the cities they serve have no flights to the UK, eg Riga and Pisa are only served by flights from within the mainland. The Paris Orly hub serves ten destinations, none of which involve crossing La Manche. Look at their route map:

ok thanks, first of all Intheknow no offence but i've had this conversation before, Union Jack, Union Flag, it is perferctly celar what I mean and the name Union Jack is pretty much publicy used as it's name, but for your benefit i@ll restate the question! Why Does Easyjet Not Display The Union Flag?

I understand Easyjet was set up by a greek and so this could lead to a reservation in displaying a UK flag. I just hope EZY is judt not looking to the future as Cedarjet suggests, as although it could be seen as one aviation market,
the United Kingdom is certainly not just one of Europe's states, it is it's own country!, (well not for much longer if integration keeps going on!)

Jonty, the "future as Cedarjet suggests" is already a fact: Europe already is a common aviation market - so there's really nothing for Easyjet to be looking forward (or for you not to be looking forward) to...

As for your comments about European integration... no, I won't comment on those: that's more something along the level of the "Non Aviation" forum.  Insane

Let's just say that I was pleasantly surprised when I read this document by IATA... I won't point out more than the following: read the paragraph beginning with "Limitations on Indirect Travel for journeys originating in Europe" (it's the third point from the bottom, especially where they mention the country of payment)...  Big thumbs up

GlobeTrekker,

Another pedantic point,

Switzerland is not a member of the EU and I personally don't see it joining in my lifetime.

Cheers

Guys, relax. KLM displays the European flag too instead of the dutch flag. Even though the dutch people are patriotic. But then, blue suits their scheme. Maybe Easyjet should put the dutch flag on their aircraft to match their scheme. But that would make no sense.

"KLM displays the European flag too instead of the dutch flag."

That is not true. KLM displays both the Dutch flag as well as the European flag.
