Is The 717 Still An Option For AM?

Sun Jan 09, 2005 12:12 am

Aeromexico and the 717 was a longstanding rumor before they ordered the 737-700. Could the 717 still be an option for AM as a MD-87 replacement?
What do you think.

Mexico was/is a DC-9 heaven so it would be nice and somewhat logical if any airline will take the 717.

Quite frankly I don't know 717fan. It sure has its logic (and a strong emotional side), but I think that AM will commit to an all-737NG narrowbody fleet. I also wonder whether the MD-87's will be replaced by 737-700's with or without winglets (assuming that loads will increase and allowing AM to deploy those planes to other routes when needed) or by 736's (although AM is apparently not convinced of their efficiency and performance). Maybe AM would consider EMB-190's, Bombardier's new C-Class airplane or the 717, but I am thinking that getting more 737-700's is what will eventually happen.

I am sure that if JR (an all-DC9 carrier) were in a good financial situation, it would consider moving to an all 717 fleet, but at this point in time, their demise looks more probable.

For better or worse, Mexico has stopped being a DC9 heaven and is becoming a 737 paradise.

It would be awesome! But I don't see them getting 717s. As far as I been told they want to fly by the end of 2006 a fleet of B737/767/777. They will be keeping MD87s till 2008/2009 but I see them getting more 737s.

Nope, 717s are still crawling off the production line at about 1 per month.

@Dacman: Hope this rumor is coming true. For how many 717's Aloha is looking for?
Thanks

Ghost mentioned on a separate thread that AM believes that the 717 is not a good performer from MEX. Ghost, could you elaborate a bit? Thanks.

Yes. B717s are good perfomers @ 0FT ASL. But not as powerful as MD80s or 87s are when flying out of MEX.

What is ODD is this new start up called A Volar Aerolíneas which they pretend to fly 717s or MD90s out of TLC which is a higher airport compared to MEX. Around 8,450FT from TLC vs the 7,343FT at MEX. But perhaps they will only offer routes within the country and perhaps AM wanted to use the 717 on medium legs from MEX to LAX, MIA, JFK with 717's just the way they like to fly their MD87s!

Ghost77 writes[Yes. B717s are good perfomers @ 0FT ASL. But not as powerful as MD80s or 87s are when flying out of MEX]. You couldn't be more wrong. The 717 has a greater power to weight ratio than either the MD-87 or the MD-80 when equiped when the optional Br715 with 21,000lbs of thrust. Even with the standard engines it's a better performer. However you are correct on the range issue, As even with the HGW version of the 717,it still falls short of either of the MDs

Dtw9,

Im not an expert in the area but several planes suffer a lot @ MEX. IIRC AM's 87s have 19,000lbs of thrust and 80s have 17,000lbs of thrust! Its kind of a '*small*' difference... but now that I remember they told me that 717s its a very powerfull plane but small (only around 100pax with AM's config) compared to 87s and 80s in their fleet and range sucks! A shame... just imagine a 717 wearing AM c/s!
