Wow. this is the first time I have seen a comparison. If even close to scale, I now understand all the modifications places will require to handle this little plane.

I actually own a 1:200 747 and A380 and I have them next to each other just to compare the sizes and they dont look that much different. The picture makes the A380 look a lot bigger, but by looking at the scale models, the A380 is bigger but the 747 still has a presence...doesnt look that small as compared to this pic.

In Size the difference is not so big:

Length: A380: 73 m B744: 70,7 m
Wingspan: A380: 79,8 m B744: 64,4 m
Height (rudder): A380: 24,1 m B744: 19,3 m
Width of Body: A380: 7,1 m B744: 6,5 m
Max Range: A380: 11.500 km B744:10.750 km
Nbr of Pax (3-Class/LH) A380: 555 B744: 390

The major difference is the wingspan (plus 15 meters) and the doubledeck of the A380 over the B747.

I own a SQ 1:200 A380 and I put it next to my

VS A346
KL 744
QF 744
Fed Ex MD-11
and BA concorde
beluga
(all in 1:200 scale)

and the A380 does not look much bigger. Well, comapred to the concorde, beluga, and the MD-11 it looks huge!

It's the huge square-footage of the 380 wing that amazes me. Makes you realize how much weight this plane will be lugging around.

Remember, although bigger than the 747, the A380 is nothing new as far as size. The C-5, AN-124, and AN-225 have been flying for a long time. The A380 will only look much larger from above, when the full wingspan can be viewed. Apart from that (although the upper deck will obviously make her look bigger), the A380 vs. 747 will not be as dramatic as in that picture, I don't think.

While the 380 is certainly larger than the 747 in most every aspect, any generated image cannot possibly present a true and fair comparison of how the two aircraft will actually appear next to each other in real life. In a year or two we may have a "real" photograph, but until then everything else is speculation and must never be construed as fact. (Posted by a photojournalist)

It is really incredible to see the 747 and the A380 next to each other. If Airbus have done that shot, I don't think they will have deliberatedly exaggerated the size of the A380 cos their whole line is that the plane will fit into a certain box (no-one told LAX this "box" needs more than a few inches clearance on either side - oh well). The 747s, the tropical Megatop especially, look like 767s parked either side of a 747. Can't believe this plane! The new shots have really stopped me in my tracks.

it's not the size of your equipment that matters, it's how proficient you are at operating it...

Isn't the 747 longer?

No, the 747 is shorter. A340-600 and 777-300 ER are longer than the A380.

Oh yeah... That's right. Giving height to that beast makes it look stubby, meaning the A380 doesn't look "proportional".

Lemmy,

The wing is large (fat) rather than long (large span) for the precise reason of carrying the weight of the Goliath beast without too many space restrictions at current airports. The fatness of the wing is unfortunately necessary to reduce wingspan but still retain the same general wing area.

Wouldn't the air bridges be one one each deck rather than both on the main deck?

Some of you folks should post picks of your models for another side by side comparison.

Compare wing areas.

Not needed, the A380 is designed to be boarded quickly from the two air bridges. The upper deck passengers will use the front door (and then head up the "grand starcase"), and the lower deck passengers will use door #2.

Dual level airbridges will speed things up, but only a few A380 hub airports will be making that investment.

Does this mean that handicapped persons will be unable to enter the upper deck? Or will there be a lift?

In the Airbus' proposal for cabin layout

http://www.airbus.com/product/a380_cabin_layouts.asp

the business class will be completely in the upper deck. So no wheelchairs at business class  Confused

I believe there will be at least one lift on board, at the rear. But I guess that handicapped passengers will be strongly persuaded to just use the main deck.

But what happens if the handicapped passenger wants to fly business class and the A380 has the Airbus standard cabin layout?

I am spewing this thing will not be ready to fly by the time Airshow Australia comes around at Avalon near Melbourne in March  Crying

The only true way of comparing size would be to see it with our own eyes up against a B747.
