Civilian Sniper Now An Aviation Threat

Mon Jan 10, 2005 5:07 pm

While on the way home tonight I heard a 60 Minute Interview concerning a civilian rifle that is mainly used for the military. It goes on to talk about how the gun is no more of a threat than any other gun yet this rifle can shoot from 2000ft. and still pearce armor like a knife though warm butter.

What has the world come to? There were reports that they tried this theory of sniper vs. a/c at LAX and said that passengers/pilots that are either parked or taxiing can be hurt/killed with a gun of this type.

Big Rifle A Terrorist Tool?

(CBS)%A0California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger decided there%92s a weapon that%92s too dangerous to be in the hands of private citizens.

This past week, a new law went into effect in California banning that weapon. It%92s the .50-caliber rifle, the Rolls Royce of sniper rifles. It%92s a big gun, a favorite of armies around the world, and it%92s still available in 49 states in this country to anyone over 18 with a clean record.

It is, without a doubt, the most powerful weapon you can buy. And, as Correspondent Ed Bradley reports, it's powerful enough to kill a man or pierce armor from more than a mile away.

So let me get this straight...

Arnie thinks a terrorist is going to say to himself, "Why, I can't use this .50 caliber sniper rifle for my attack, these weapons are illegal..."?

And these guns have been around for 30 or 40 years now? Why bring this up now? What terrorist is going to risk life and limb just to take a couple of potshots at an airliner? I don't mean to sound crass, but there are more effective ways of terrorizing people than taking a few shots at an airplane with a .50 caliber rifle.

(Waits for the FBI to kick down his door. Ack!)

It's easy enough to buy a shoulder-fired surface-to-air missile, which would stand a good chance of rendering an engine inoperative. Why would anyone use 50cal against an airliner? This is just silly.
