Continental Airlines Announces Daily, Nonstop Service Between Houston and Queretaro, Mexico
Monday January 10, 11:00 am ET

HOUSTON, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL - News) will begin daily nonstop service from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston to Queretaro, Mexico, on March 17, 2005, pending government approval.
Queretaro will be Continental's 30th destination in Mexico. The airline already serves more destinations in Mexico from the U.S. than any other airline, with approximately 560 departures each week.

Queretaro, located in central Mexico, has been the site of many key events in the country's history. Today the city is a strong manufacturing center with many businesses dedicated to serving the automobile industry and other industries.

"Continental is the leader in providing business travel to Mexico," said Pete Garcia, Staff Vice President, Latin America. "More than 100 U.S.-based companies, particularly in Detroit, the Midwest and East Coast, have manufacturing operations or do business in Queretaro. Our new daily, nonstop flight will provide them, as well as Mexican residents of the U.S., with convenient travel options."

The flight schedule is:

From To Departs Arrives
HOUSTON QUERETARO 8:40 p.m. 10:55 p.m.
QUERETARO HOUSTON 7:00 a.m. 9:10 a.m.

Continental Express will utilize the Embraer regional jet on its daily nonstop service between Houston and Queretaro. The 50-seat jet features jet- bridge loading, a fully equipped galley, a spacious lavatory, and a comfortable interior with only window and aisle seating.

Continental Airlines is the second-largest U.S. airline into Latin America and the Caribbean, with service to 64 destinations in 24 countries. The airline began flights to Huatulco, Mexico, on Dec. 17, bringing the number of Mexican destinations served by the airline to 29.

We aren't even finished yet!

One of the VP's I'm friendly with in Houston says our Mexico development will reach its endpoint with close to 45 destinations, and as many as 3-5 additional US gateways!

I didn't even realize there were that many commercial airports in Mexico. As it is now we serve more destinations down there than most of their "home grown" flag carriers... might as well start calling it MEXpressJet instead!

LAX-Mexico City would be a great addition, anyone know when we should be hearing the decision.

Wow, who'dve seen that coming a year or so ago.

Big destinations? 2ndary? Or more tertiary?

Regardless, good stuff!  Big thumbs up

Good for CO... Hope someday they upgrade their jungle-jets for some bigger aircraft, just to compete in capacity with MX/AM's A318/19/20, MD80, B737/757/767.

"I didn't even realize there were that many commercial airports in Mexico."
There are around 35 international airports in Mexico.

Isnt Queretaro a dust airport up at a higher elevation?? If I remember it correctly it was but I very well could be mistakened as its hard to tell which airport is which in some places in Mexico

WOW!
This is great new for me as a Queretaro resident! Indeed Queretaro is an important industrial city in Mexico. Companies such as Kellogs, Michelin, Samsung, Daewoo just to name some have important factories here. This flight will serve as a good connection for Asian buisnessmen, as the won't have to travel to MEX to fly.

The airport that CO is going to operate to is a state of the art facility, with a hydraulic concrete runway long enough for a 747 (maybe A380  Smile) and the tallest CT in latin america. Currently the terminal is modern but small, but has tons of room to grow. The airport also has a taxiway parallel to the runway, not a common feature in small Mexican airports.

The past QRO airport was recently shut down, upon the completion of the new one. It really makes no sense that the past one wasn't kept for GA aviation.

Currently the airport only has VW service to MEX and MTY. As a Mexican I also feel that Mexican airlines have to be more aware, and not let foreigners dominate the country. It would be great news if MX or AM would start service here, it would be equally good for JR or 6A to come in.

Greetings from QRO!

CO is doing quite well down here. They are making Queretaro airport international long before MX and AM. I have relatives over there who are anxious to connect at IAH flying non-stop from their brand new airport. Way to go, CO!

Out of curiosity and off topic, does anybody know how many CLE-MEX pax fly on the CLE-SAT-MEX rj flights? That's a long hike in an rj, but clearing US customs with 49 people in SAT might be easier than with xxx people in IAH.

"and as many as 3-5 additional US gateways!"

Just guessing here,

San Diego, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver, and perhaps Austin or DFW.

I guess it depends on how small the customs facility is at SAT (isn't is just a small space next to baggage claim in Terminal 1?). It might not be much of a hassle going through IAH, with their new FIS opening.

San Diego, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver, and perhaps Austin or DFW.

rather doubt they'd attempt thus from a hub destination where the entrenched carrier(s) will just pile on capacity until CO bails...

...especially the idea of them doing so out of Denver.

"It would be great news if MX or AM would start service here, it would be equally good for JR or 6A to come in".

In the mean time I think AM/MX wont be starting any service out of there sooner or later.I don't want to be sceptic, but I think that QRO will keep its VW routes to MEX and MTY and GDL , SLP w/Litoral.or under the "new" Regional carrier

May be someday a Heavy cargo jet

Don't forget BJX is already a Hub for all mid-size cities, and small towns in central Mexico. I mean its a tough competitor for QRO to beat

How do you compare TLC PBC QRO and CVJ in terms of market share for domestic and international routes. All of them are part of the Mexico city SAM (metropolitan Airport System )

I've heard Cuernavaca's on the immediate shopping list.

Some of these Mexican towns are doing so well Continental has added a second RJ to the daily flight schedule. If they had ERJ-170's, they could really get some mileage out of places like Torreon, Chihuahua, San Luis Potosi, etc. Heck, Monterrey and Guadalajara are candidates for an aircraft upgrade.

Wonder if Aviacsa will try to compete up north with low fares to IAH?

The cities that CO added RJ flights to are the ones that American Eagle started serving from Dallas. I assume it's just a business strategy to run American out of the places CO has held a monopoly on for so many years.

Not at all. Cuernavaca has everything to become a heaven for elderly Americans, another Florida if you wish. Great weather round the year, nice city with a lot of good places for eating and shopping, close enough to a big city as MEX in case you need something unavailable at Cuernavaca, plus it's cheaper that Florida! It would make sense to give it a shot as an international destination for CO.

Don't forget the cheap drugs (prescription and otherwise).

With such a large Mexican presence, CO can start a new advertising campaign:

"Your job's already gone to Mexico, you should too. Fly Continental."
