UAL In Copenhagen (CPH)

Tue Jan 11, 2005 1:23 pm

This topic may already exist, but after performing a search, I couldn't find anything...

I was reading a trip report: http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/53358/ and I was very surprised to see a UAL plane at the gate in CPH.

So I started investigating and found that UAL has leased an unspecified number of planes (I believe 763s) to SAS while the Scandinavian airline is "re-doing" some of their planes. Apparently, these flights to CPH using United metal originate in ORD and IAD and are staffed by SAS crews. United's travel policies do not apply…which means regular UA NRSA travel is not permitted (you'd need a Z-fare).

I wasn't able to ascertain the duration of the leases, although I got the impression they are short-term.

So nothing too exciting, just an interesting sight for CPH spotters and likely to confuse some UAL buffs like myself.

At least United can earn a little cash as opposed to paying $$ to park extra planes in the desert.

The following is from http://www.united.com

It's one flight (CPH-IAD) and one aircraft (767-300) that is leased in so SAS can have Connexion By Boeing installed in their 330's and 340's.
Very specific.

The United-SAS lease is in fact a wet lease, where the flight crew and the cabin crew are all staffed by United employees. In Apollo the schedule runs through March 27, after which SAS picks back up with their own equipment on the run.

Thank you for the more specific details. I was going on information obtained from a UA res agent who seemed to know what she was talking about.

Just to clarify, United is not leasing one particular aircraft to SAS but UA operate IAD-CPH with 763 aircraft and the exact aircraft (registration) varies from day to day. In fact, when one arrives at IAD, another one sits at the gate getting ready for departure to CPH so the same aircraft never operates the flight two days in a row.

Isn't it a mixture of SK and UA staff? I have just heard that at one occasion. But I could be wrong as well.

They couldn't use SK staff as the SK staff aren't trained to handle a 763. They might have one or two F/As from SK, but I doubt it. Unless some of the SK F/As are still current on the 763, which seems highly unlikely.

Hello all,

Most of the time the flight from SFOIAD/UA950 turns into the SK926 flight IADCPH. Sometimes the SFO flight has some problems when it arrives at IAD and the SK925 CPHIAD has to return to CPH. This is the case a few times each week. When everything works out as planned the SK925 turns into the IADZRH flight for UA. The flight crews for the IADCPH are all UA.

The flight is handled by SAS staff at both stations.
