America West Gift Cards?

Fri Jan 14, 2005 4:35 am

I was at a 7-11 store this morning, and I notice next to the counter.....AMERICA WEST GIFT CARDS in a package. They were vouchers, I think. I've never seen this before. Do any other airlines have these?  Confused

One of the best marketing tools I've ever seen! Doesn't get anymore convenient than that. "here Bobby go to Vegas on me". Seriously...ingenious.

It would be great to see a spot at those self check-in kiosks where you can swipe your prepaid gift card.

What are the increments? $100? $250? $500?

And what happens with the leftover credit? Do you get it back in cash, or is it going towards future purchases on America West?

They are all over. I remember that CVS had an ad with them in it.

Kind of like Dell computer gift cards, I don't get it. Does HP have any city ticket offices? I don't see why paper and virtual gift certificates wouldn't do the same thing, probably for less money. Usually a third-party proecessor gets a cut when the GC is redeemed.

N801NW,

HP does have a city ticket office in PHX. The cards can also be used over the phone, on line, or at the ticket counter (perhaps could be used for a F/C upgrade at check in). A paper or virtual gift certificate would do the same thing, but when giving a gift people usually like to have something tangible. Also, distributing them in gas stations and grocery stores opens them up to a whole new market that would usually remain un-tapped. The value of exposure to a larger base of potential revenue passengers far exceeds the cost of using a card versus a virtual gift certificate.

Its a brilliant move on their part. Last year gift card sales in the US were an estimated $55 billion. In 2007 its expected to be up to $85 billion. My company we sold over 10 million cards, that's a lot of returning and new customrs.

From America West's website...

America West is turning into quite the little code sharing airline....

From their website they codeshare with:
British Airways
Hawaiian
Virgin Atlantic
Qantas - this one is brand new
Royal Jordanian
Northwest (pacific flights only)
Eva Air
Big Sky Airlines.
