AirTran Might Take Some Of The Free Gates At DFW!

Fri Jan 14, 2005 11:51 am

In today's Fort Worth Star Telegram AirTran said that they would continue to increase service left by the void of Delta.

http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/business/10634707.htm

AirTran says they wont say cities yet, but the will in the near future!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Any guess on what cities might be added? I'm thinking MDW, SFO, DEN, TPA, BOS, CAK, LGA, maybe SEA, PDX, CUN, CZM

When is the full DL dehubbing of DFW take effect? How many flights will
DL have left at DFW after the pulldown? Will DL just have service to the
main hubs at ATL, CVG, and SLC left?

Not a surprise at all, especially in light of the TZ deal falling through. Before the TZ deal, it was already thought that FL was going to increase their ops @ DFW once DL closed their hub operation there. DFW is probably going to give them a good deal on gates, and I'm willing to guess that the buildup they would have had @ MDW had they been able to get TZ's ops there will now be focused @ DFW.

As for cities, I'm guessing some of the following will be added (current or announced FL cities):

DFW-EWR
DFW-LGA
DFW-MDW
DFW-IND
DFW-TPA
DFW-SFO
DFW-MIA
DFW-PIT
DFW-BOS
DFW-JAX
DFW-DEN
DFW-SRQ

Actually the correct number of Delta flights on Jan 31, 2005 will be 22

ATL - 13
SLC - 5
CVG - 4

Anyone know who will buy the delta maintance center, according to early report they were suppose to close it also by feb 05, any incentives by dfw officials to other carriers to lease it.

Srbmod,

DFW-RDU should be on that possible list as well, with DL having already
stopped its DFW-RDU flights with ASA CRJ's, leaving AA with the only
nonstop DFW-RDU service.

I'm still hoping for FL to add DFW-PHL

I doubt they announce anything until closer to the earning conf. call. No doubt that they have something in mind somewhere, with 19 jets on the way this year. They might have been waiting on some type of development with FLYI or USAir before committing, but it looks like that will be pushed back 6 mos or so.
I wouldn't be surprised if they go after a failing carriers assets before bankruptcy rather than after, in light of what happened with the ATA deal. That's the problem with an auction type of scenerio, not always a bargin if you really want it and your competitors know you want it.

I hope this happens for FL. I think expansion might be difficult due to AA's stranglehold on DFW, but critics said the same thing about DL and FL at ATL.

This would also be good b/c FL can give WN a run for their money in the Dallas market, especially considering FL has a better LCC product.

Best of luck to FL's possible ops at DFW.

What are their plans given their dismal performance in DFW so far?

Are things that bad? If so, even free gates are no bargain. Of course Delta is still in the mix until the end of the month, so when they drop out, it should help. Maybe they are waiting to see how DL's exit will improve things before they add flights. Frequency some times builds traffic on it's own when you give passengers an option of more than 1 departure time. I've heard AA doesn't care about profits when it comes to keeping competition out of DFW.

I could see FL doing the following.

BWI
PHL
PIT
MDW
CAK
BOS
EWR
DEN
FLL
MCO
TPA
ATL
LAS
LAX
SFO
SEA

Only my guess, though a certain amount of cities that WN can not serve from DAL!

13 gates is a bit too much, probably why this may take a while, even with the deadline that DFW had initially set for the incentives (forgot what it was, but something like 2wks.). I would believe FL is trying to negotiate the same incentives with less gates.

I would agree with RDU-DFW, on the fact that it is still a fairly large O&D market between both, plus with added connection markets such as DEN and LAS. I have no stats on it, but I can recall a large number of passengers flying RDU-ATL-DFW from personal experience at FL. Not to say it would give RDU another true low cost alternative from AA to DFW!

The loads in and out of DFW have been great. It is near impossible to get there from ATL, and the other cities are coming along nicely. DFW has 1121 out of a possible 1404 seats filled today. That's a 80% load factor, not to dismal to me. Out of 702 available seats from DFW to ATL 676 are full today making for a 96% load factor, once again is that dismal? Check your facts before you judge an airlines operation. AirTran speaks softly, but carries a big stick. We may not be the golden child of the media, but we run a damn good airline.

Airtran737,

ATL loads *are* spectacular. However, by your own numbers it looks like the non-ATL flights out of DFW have 445 out of 702 booked, or a load factor of 63%. They're longer stage lengths so you're further down on the CASM curve...but 63%'s not all that spectacular. But, even if it's not--it'll grow, particularly after January 31st.

Out of DFW-LAS, LAX, MCO, BWI, FLL which has been the most and least successful?

I'm surprised DFW-BOS, PHL, TPA are not in the mix.

I'd suspect if they do add cities it would be more florida cities, PHL, BOS, possibly PIT. I'd suspect places that WN can't fly into Love. Maybe some west coast cities to try to get transcon connections.

ATL is doing well; I'll grant you that, but from the OD information that FL files, it looks like last year most of the other routes were running well below a 60% load factor, and often below a 50% load factor. Now they could be getting reeeeeally high yields but the chances of that are between zero and none.

They have to be doing something right in DFW. I noticed the other day that they are putting 3 73Gs to ATL (2 returning with 1 MCO - DFW). I would expect them to possibly add DEN, SFO and probably a new city out west (from both ATL and DFW). I also expect them to add somewhere in the northeast, bet chances are BOS and PHL and possibly 2 cities in the midwest. I would suspect CAK, DAY, MSP would all be in the running for these. It will be interesting to see what happens with them, they are definitely poised for yet another great year. Still wished I worked for them =)

New routes do tak a while to catch on. LAS has been a pretty good route, as well as LAX. BWI leaves a bit to be desires, but hopefully it will improve.

I'm surprised about DFW-BWI being slow. They have two dailys, just figured they needed the 2nd departure.
