18 Hrs Flight... Any Experience

Sat Jan 15, 2005 6:04 pm

Hi everyone..

I dont know if it was discussed before.
In 1999 I flew from istanbul to tokyo and from tokyo to istanbul non-stop.
It took 11 and 12 hrs.

I like flying a lot but 12 hrs is too much for me. I really got bored.

Is there anyone flew between Singapore and LA non-stop.? It is 18 hrs I know.

What to do in a plane for 18 hrs?

thnx for your memories..

EWR-Singapore is even longer and it's the one that is 19 hours (18 on eastbound).

SIN-LAX is about 16 hours and return could be as long as 18 or so hours depending on wind and route taken on that particular day.

i took QF 94 LAX-MEL a few weeks back and that was pusing 16 hours, it's the most annoying and boring flight i've ever taken, you get to the 12 hr point and realise you still have nearly 4 hours left of doing nothing, you can only watch the same crap on the PTV so often and it's a flight in total darkness!

i don't recommend it to anyone!

My family and I went to Singapore, we flew the EWR-SIN route on the SIA A345. We were in raffles class, which is really nice. It does get boring after a while. It is a flight to remember though.

I flew HKG<>EWR last month on Continental B772ER. The only things i did were to sleep, eat, ptv, toilet, then repeated for the whole 15 hour period. Return was even worse... same period of time but choices on ptv were so limited that all channels had been watched on the outbound flight. So this leaves sleep, eat and toilet being the only activities. (Seat pitch was surprising great with 34", however!)

Also HKG<>JFK in August on Cathay A346. Much better since i received upgrade on outbound flight - makes my 14.5 hour transpolar flight much enjoyable but still did the same activties: sleep, eat, ptv and toilet. Return was in Y, but loading was so low that only 50 people in the 220 seats Y class! Great flight too with good food and ptv programmes.

Flew SQ 19/20 (LAX-SIN) this spring in the economy extra section and have to say it was maybe one of the best flights I've ever taken. Subjectively seemed shorter than my usual west coast to Europe flights. Partially the seat room, but also the AVOD as well as lighting changes and the snack bar really helped break up the flight. Laptop power in the seats helps a bit too. The flight over (SQ19) is two hours longer (18+), fighting headwind, but frankly the return flight of 16 hours seemed longer. I think the departure time on the return makes sleep less attractive, plus the dread of the usual LA immigration and customs process.

Flew QF from LAX-SYD and I remember it being around 15 hrs. Was in the upper deck, seats 16 A and B for me and my brother. I brought my mp3 player and my brother had his as well. There is plenty to watch on the PTV. We just ate and listened to music and talked about the upcoming month we were gonna spend in Australia. The flight home sort of sucked. After the grueling 14-15 hrs back to LAX, we had to get on a S80 and fly to AUS...ugh.
I can't imagine flying 18 hrs...

I flew pretty much almost 18 hours on same seat, same plane.

on Saudi Arabian Airlines SV

from RUH-JED-JFK-IAD

got a PTV so I was alright the whole way and I slept over the Atlantic.

I dont mind long flights, but I did once feel sick doing the JFK-ANC-TPE
on CI, that was not much fun for me due to the layover in ANC in middle of night interrupting my sleep haha.

I find the 12-hr eastbound flights about the max. I'm able to suffer through. I can't imagine the jet-lag and the mess the 18-hour flight does to one's biorhythms. Poor F/As.
My 32-hour nearly non-stop Atlantic t- Pacific coast bus ride Buenos Aires, Argentina - Puerto Montt, Chile was something to remember (great comfy seats, a movie every 4-5 hours and 3x daily hot meals onboard), but still 32 hours is really looong time.

Nyquil! go to sleep! Find a good book, the kind, you don't want to put down. went back and forth between LA and Auckland and Sydney back before these new fangled PTVs. I'm pretty sure that SYD-LAX was under 13 hours.

In 2002, I took DL55 ATL-NRT which was 14.5 hrs. In a nutshell, it kicked my ass. To make it worse, I was stuck in coach and the movies that they were playing didn't interest me in the least bit, which made the flight even longer. In the end, you find yourself gathering with a group of people in the back for the plane just to stretch your legs. Fortunately, the lovely flight attendants set out some Oreos for anyone who wanted some to grab a few. I asked one of the flight attendants how they were able to cope with such a long flight. The one I spoke with said that she had been with Delta for 30 years and flew this flight once every week. She said that by working during the flight as well as taking the flight so often makes the time go by a lot quicker, it seems. I guess thats true. I thought that by bringing so many books and magazines, I could cope, but you eventually get tired of reading. And the music that was playing on the plane gets old after the 4th or 5th time straight hearing it. To make the story even worse, we were flying at 39,000 feet and looking out over Canada, Alaska, and Siberia, it was all cloud cover, not one hole to look out and see what the ground looked like. So looking outside was pointless. It made for a very boring flight. And when I did finally get into NRT, after a 2 hr wait, I got to catch another plane to ICN. That wasn't so bad because it was my first trip on a 747.

SYD-LAX is at least 13 hrs on QF 744. Depending on head winds, route flown, weather, and time of year, it can stretch that flight out long.

I've done ATL-CPT via SID, probably 16-18 hours.
I've also done JNB-ATL via CPT & SID, probably 20 hours.

It's bad, but flying on SA, it isn't terrible. The PTV's are great, and there is a good selection of movies, I also brought my iPod for some good music.

Sleeping isn't easy though with those crappy A340-600 seats, with the IFE box underneath the seat in front of you. Food is great (and free), and in-flight service is great.

Overall, I'll do it again, South Africa is great, and worth the long ride.

My recommendation for the 18-19 hr EWR-SIN/SIN-EWR route would be to get in Raffles Class, Eat after take off, enjoy a glass of wine while reading as much of a book as you can (or do work if you're on a biz trip) then pop a sleeping pill or grab some nyquil and sleep for as long as possible. When you wake up, watch everything on the IFE. Twice.

longest I've flown was SIN-CDG which was around 14h30min I think . actually I found it far easier than I expected and easier to relax on than say an 8-10 hour flight.

I hope to fly one of the A345 flights soon.

Half the people I know ( who often transit to southern Africa ) drink too much and take knock-out pills on those long flights. I don't do either... but found a 12 hour flight from PDX to S Korea a decade ago on Delta to be all right... and two years ago, was lucky enough to get an upper-deck seat on a SAA 747 from ATL to JNB. It was okay... but the return via Cape Verde was a real long flight, and the lower deck coach seats were pretty jammed, although the service and PTV set-ups were all right. Stopping at Isle del Sol for fuel at 1 a.m. is a drag... waking everybody up, and I ended up being on that plane for nearly 20 hours. I have not heard very many complimentary things about their current use of the A340-600 which seems to have to refuel at Cape Verde in either direction, and the seat pitch is really tight. Aside from that... getting some up-and-around time, walking around a bit, a fair amount of water, and perhaps a no-jet-lag pill seems to help. If you smoke a bit, as I do... you just need to "turn it off" or chew on a nicotine gum or something or you will make yourself nutty. The miracle of it all is this... you are going half-way around the planet earth in fairly short order, and the ability to do that is indeed one of the wonders of our present world.... have a good trip !

All of the suggestions above, movies, mp3 players, laptop computers, books, sleeping aids etc. are good.

While I'm not going to suggest where you should sit, I will recommend you put a lot of careful thought into advanced seat selection, to ensure you get what you like.

Windows are nice for the view and for sleeping, but aisle seats allow you to get up to exercise or use the lav as often as you like without being trapped by one (or two) other sleeping pax. What is more important to you?

Exit rows seats often have more space, but some seats don't recline there, and window seats at the exit row can often have a cold draft.

Bulkhead row seats may give you more legroom, but the armrests usually cannot be raised, and there is often limited (or no) storage space for your stuff on the floor. This means you will have to access the overhead bin everytime for your books, magazines, mp3 player, computer, batteries etc.

My choice is always the last row, because the thing that annoys me most is children out of control, kicking my seat, slamming the tray up and down, throwing things over the seat, and the last row alleviates this. Again, something to consider.

I suggest you study the seating arrangement plan for the aircraft serving the flight you will be on, and choose the seat which is best for what you need.

You read "seat from hell" postings many times, and often just from short flights of 2 to 5 hours. This is not the kind of thing you want to endure for an 18 hour journey. By doing your research, you make someone else sit there.

Being bored is one thing, arriving furious is another.

Effective May '1st Thai Airways will connect BKK and NYC daily as TG790 / 791. The flight is forecasted to be less than 17hrs. There are big billboards up here along the high way advertising this new route, which I think is great. I have to travel a lot to the US East Coast from here,BKK, and most of the time I use SQ via SIN to FRA/AMS and then in to JFK/EWR. These flights, from BKK, are around 30hrs of travel time and having TG in place will save me some 14hrs. ETD and ETA's on these TG flights are good too.
However, I have flown SQ on SIN/EWR and thought this would never end.It was really long and I didnt know what to do with myself since I cant sleep on airplanes, regardless what class I am in. Most of the time I work or do my travel expenses ( LH has Internet now on their planes - which is nice).
I will be on one of the first TG flights out of BKK and will report later how it went.

The longest I've flown is JNB-ATL, it was something like 19 hours, but with 17+ hours actual flying.

Also, JNB-SYD, it's 15 and a half hours, non-stop on a B744. Not fun, but I enjoyed it because it was a B744 Big grin

I have done LAX-MEL on UA which was 15.5 hours, had a whole row to myself which made it somewhat more comfortable.
SYD-LAX-SYD on NZ, was shorter at around 13 hours,

LAX-TPE-KUL on MH - 18 hours with the fuel stop in TPE, but again I had the whole middle row to myself. Pop up all the armrests and voila, instant bed. Except during the turbulence when I nearly rolled of the seats  Wink/being sarcastic

The longest flying I have done in one stretch was, MCO-JFK-LAX-MEL, I was delirious by the time I got home.

I remember my French Class wetn to Paris this last summer and the flight was soo much fun. We pissed off the FA's soo much that they told us to make up our minds about being on the plane and when she came back, one of our chaperones was al like "we feel as if we would like the captain to pull over and let us off here" this was 35,000 feet over the North Atlantic. We played poker and i won 25 dollars Big grin

Just flew EWR-SIN, used points to upgrade. Flight time was only 17 1/2 hours, and would only do this on SQ and 345. The flight was good, usual high standard SQ service. I had set my mind up for 19 hours, so loosing almost two was a bonus. My other ways of getting to Sing took between 26 and 30 hours, so this again is a bonus.

Coming back do not have enough points to upgrade, so this could be another story, but believe that Exec Economy is not bad.

On my long haulers I use same routine, Aisle seat, get up regularly, no alcohol, change clock to arrival destination on take off and try to confuse my body to accept this. I try to fly SQ, as there service is much better than the rest.

I find the best way to adjust to a 'jetlag' timezone is to keep the window shade up for the entire flight. It allows you to adjust slowly to incremental changes going on outside rather than arriving and suddenly being hit with a 12 hour change. Of course a lot of airlines are picky about that and keep the blinds down for far longer than they need to on overnight flights, but still it does seem to work, and serves as entertainment too.

When I was a kid, we had flown GUM-HON-SFO-CVG to see my family when my dad was in the USAF. I remember taking CO's MD-11 when their motto was "Take me home, Continental". Boy, those were the LONGEST days. We'd spend an entire day traveling in 1985. Those bad experiences are why I don't go on any flights longer than 7 hrs anymore.  Big grin

Back in 1994, Mom and I flew from CHA to GMP via ATL and PDX. Total travel time each way was about 24 hours, two spent during layovers in ATL and PDX. We went business class but were bumped up to first due to oversold business class. Ate, read books, watched the in-flight entertainment on the LCD bulkhead screen (no PTVs then) and walked around to stretch out every so often. Delta's MD-11's were sweet. Every so often, I'd walk up to either the L1 or R1 door and look out the porthole. Due to the design of the cabin, the first class galley was at the L2 position and no bulkheads between the L/R1 doors and row 1. Seats reclined fully and were spaced so that you could walk around seat 2 regardless of whether it was fully reclined or not. Put it this way-I'm 6'6" and couldn't touch the seat in front of me from mine. Loved it!

It is on +10hr flights that flying First/Business really comes into its own.

I've flown BKK-LHR in both TG Y and BA F. While the time dragged on aboard TG, I was quite happy to slit my wrists by the time we got to the Black Sea I was fairly content on BA and by the time my 11hrs or so were up I was quite happy to get off. Alas I was 17 at the time and have changed my ways of longhaul since.

My only 10hr+ flight recently was LHR-SFO in BA J. We had a two hour ground delay before take off so was effectively onboard for 13hrs. The time passed by remarkably easily, drinks service were carried out on ground (alas only OJ and water because BA don't want to pay duty on alcoholic drinks consumed on the ground grr) and as soon as we took of our dinner orders were brought round, got horribly drunk which put me to sleep (although had a bottle of water with each glass of wine/champagne/brandy) and awoke with about 3hrs left of the flight, took a walk down to the back of the plane and came upstairs again. Stepped off the plane in San Francisco completely in time and not flagging at all. When I went back to London four days later I was in J again and got right into the timezone again and was back at work the following day with no ill effect.

If you can afford F/J then on +10hr flights it is a real must, the time melts away....

The most frequent long hauls I fly are LAX-MEL and Vice versa and SIN-LHR and vice versa, all on QF.

Cmon guys....is it really so bad? Don't we all LOVE flying? Isn't that a part of why we are all hopelessly addicted to this website? Doesn't spending time in planes turn us on or is it just me?!

I love long haul flights...the longer the better..in any class. I can just sit there forever gazing out the window at sunset, sunrise, passing cities below..whatever. I eat everything that's served on my tray and flick through every channel on my PTV with boyish glee. And every so often, as I sit back and close my eyes, almost becoming one with the surrounding metal and technology, I am still amazed that 400 passengers can still fly almost halfway around the world in a single hop in relative comfort...it's a miracle.

Ok, I'll stop now before I wet myself....

Longest flight I did... MEL - SIN - FRA - JFK with SQ. Total time, including transit time in SIN and FRA = 32 hours. The interesting thing was the entire journey was on the same 744 with 3 different sets of flight crew.

A totally enjoyable flight despite the long journey. Zero jet lag and arrived in JFK fresh as a daisy.

MEL - SIN SQ228 DEP 1715 ARR 2150 (7hrs 35mins)
SIN - FRA SQ26 DEP 2355 ARR 0605 +1 (13hrs 10mins)
FRA - JFK SQ26 DEP 0820 ARR 1050 (8hrs 30mins)

The return flights however were a pain, due to the huge time difference in flying eastwards. Luckily I broke my journey with a stopover in SIN.
