Cheapskate Airlines!

Sun Jan 16, 2005 8:15 am

I travel often on business and always go business or first if the carrier still has it... Not long ago I started noticing how skimpy and pathetic the service in the first class lounges had become. In the past you could count on a nice sandwitch along with a coldcut tray and perhaps a desert machine, etc.

Now we are down to nuts, chips and cokes....! JAL and some other overseas lines still make you feel very special with a fully catered lounge, and if you like, a selection of booze that would make any airborne lush grin. All included in the very stiff cost of a full fare premimum ticket. Given that the average person in that lounge has paid several thousand dollars for the international fare, what sense does it make to try to skimp? As seats keep getting smaller as well as the size of the aircraft, soon it just won't make any sense to have the company shell out all that money. Bring back the 747s with the grand old service and wide seats! I'll gladly pay up!

That's why I like flying on international flag carriers rather than U.S. carriers when I fly internationally. Even in coach, passengers were more cared for while in flight, than U.S. carriers. That's been my experience.

Jeez, Zweed...relax. The guy asked an aviation-related question in an aviation-related forum. Here it is, in case you missed it:

Given that the average person in that lounge has paid several thousand dollars for the international fare, what sense does it make to try to skimp?

Then again, I guess none of us should be spending any time or money browsing aviation sites on the internet. We should all be out spending our free time servinging the less fortunate and helping mankind, right?  Insane

Anyway, back the the topic.

NSFGUY, I flew Delta first class last summer and was blown away by the service. Really friendly cabin crew, and the food was outstanding. Without a doubt the most enjoyable flight I've been on.

Unfortunately, NSFGUY, nowadays all most people care about is how many pennies they can save and not anything else- I totally agree with you and miss "the good old days" too, but they are never coming back. I can promise if you are on my "Red Tail" overseas, I will do the best I can for you with what I am given....

2H4 -- It's quite possible Zweed read NSFGUY's profile. I did. Think maybe "slapin' Ho's" is part of the service he misses too? Sometimes it's not just the answer that needs to be in context, but the question too.  Smile

Cheers.

"slapin ho's" or not.... I have to travel in my real life, and like all playas' I like to go out with some comfort, like driving an eldorado while you have house slippers on! Nevertheless I expect a level of service when I have to be sealed in a tube for 14-15 hours.. Used to not be a problem, in fact it was a real pleasure to relax and unwind with some legroom and elbow room. I totally understand people wanting to travel refugee class for some ridiculous sum.. I expect they suffer gladly the penalty of severe economy, all well and good if you only want to do this every 10 years or SO. I have to travel to keep a great job, and the company lets me call the shots as far as what class and what line I choose. I did take NWA from PDX to NRT in business first Oct 18 of last year, then on to MNL on NWA #1 also Z class in a 744. The new 330 to me was boring and the new seats hard as a rock, really liked the old school endless legroom in the NWA 1st class 747s. CHEERS!

***Sarcasm alert***

Count me in the Cheap Majority.

I would fly Ryanair if they flew in the USA.

For $1 a ticket, heck yes I would fly on a 350 pax 757-200 standing room only on a transatlantic flight.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

But alas, I have to pay more than I want to for services I dont really want to pay for, like food, reclining seats, FAs that speak English, lavatories, etc.

You know, I never really learned in "scholl" how to decifer irony and comedy from text. There are these amazing things called emoticons that can be used to help express such feelings though.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Sorry to say but may be your "standards" are not very high. Have you ever flown on SQ or CX premium class?

A colleague of mine just returned ATL-JFK-NCE on DL in BusinessElite or whatever its called, apparently the service was appalling, the lounges in ATL and JFK were dreadful, no open bar (which is standard for all European airline lounges these days), crabby unhelpful staff, awful food on board. US carriers need to up their game.

If someone pays for first/business with their OWN cash (ie, not the company's dollar), then I think they have every right to complain if the service doesn't live up to their expectations. However, if it's on someone else's dime, or it's an upgrade, you have no right to complain. I just got 6 free upgrades from CO over the holiday season, and I'll tell ya I was estatic to get them, sure beat riding in coach (not that coach is that bad for 5'8", 155 pound me). The service was exceptional, the seats extremely comfortable, the food was delicious, and the view out of the window was the best part since I didn't have to contend with the wing blocking the view.

For all of you out there who complain about freebee upgrades or company paid for seats, how about actually trying to enjoy what you got; maybe take a minute to think about those who have far less (and I am not talking about the folks riding in coach) before you start your bitching, whining, and moaning.

I certainly hope you don't actaully work for an airline. I'm sure most companies would not hestiate to move thier business somehwere else with that attitude.

"Sir, we don't really care about you and our service commitment to you. You didn't actaully pay for this seat yourself, so quit complaining!"

Airportugal210: you took the words right out of my mouth....

The simply truth is people don't pay thousands upon thousand to fly First anymore... Maybe to select destination such as Transatlantic or Transcon but not many places elsewhere. So there for you don't deserve to be fed anything but peanuts, cookies, or any other snacks. Take your petty a$$ and go to the food court. If you don't like it. OH WELL!

Last but not least a good portion of airlines on the other side of the globe are helped in more ways then one by their governments. So the day the U.S. Govenerment decideds to pay all the airlines bills will be the day you see that level of service. Till then like the Flight Attendants are told "Pack a brown bag"
"TWA... One Mission, Yours."
