Dumb Flight Attendants

Sun Jan 16, 2005 3:22 pm

Does anyone have any "dumb flight attendant stories" like that one who gave a baby his milk with some sort ot sedative when asked to bring juice for the baby, a baby who had been crying for god knows how long?

That F/A wasn't dumb, she was probably desperate for that annoying baby to shut up.

I would hope so, though a crying baby needs to be made quiet somehow that is not the way. Very dumb move and opened the carrier to a horrible lawasuit. What are people thinking?

That story I just couldn't believe...

I was working the galley on the back of a 767-300 last December or November... I can't quite remember, but it was out of GLA enroute to YVR. The other F/A's were out in the cabin doing their first bar, so I was alone in the back rushing to stuff 150 casseroles and readying the trolleys for the meal service. A young father with a sceaming kid came to join me. The child didn't stop screaming since takeoff and he had moved to the back galley in a desperate move to leave the cabin so the pax around them wouldn't get annoyed. He was pale a a ghost and looked at me with pleading eyes...

Well, I spent the next 20-25 minutes with him conversing as I readied the meals. The kid did not stop. I can't believe some would get aggravated enough to do such things. Kids screaming in the cabin are a fact of life at Mach .8 and are caused by the fact that they cannot equalise their inner ears combined with the constant white noise and the fact that they cannot fall asleep.

...back to the dumb flight attendants thread, oh... they're out there. That sedative story is probably the most shining example.

That was an NW FA, shame to say. He put Xanex in the apple juice that a mother asked for in her baby's bottle. It was on AMS-DTW flight. He was a 98-hire, who according to one of his classmates, was a total moron. Was on a level 2 disaplinary for chronic lateness. Most of us are not dumb, we're profesionals. It's not uncommon to slip a shot of whisky or something similar into a bottle in order to help make a restless child sleep - so I think it's a little harsh to start berating the FA.

Backfire, I hope you are joking (I don't always get humor on here), because if you aren't that is illegal in multiple ways. Dispensing alcohol to someone under 21/18/whatever, or possibly damaging their health if their liver cannot take the alcohol. I would definitely sue someone to an inch of their life if they served my baby alcohol because it was being to loud. It might be because I am an American and Americans love to sue, but doing something ludicrous like that is unacceptable and deserves a lawsuit.

Crying children is a fact of life. Some people can handle it, while others can't, but if you have a huge problem with it, then a level headed person would at least talk to the parent to see if there is anything that they could do to help the situation rather then just taking into their own hands.

Sometimes I wonder if the parents even think about what they are doing to their kids when they are brought on board with snotty noses, earaches and the rest of the maladies that make a child and an adult miserable. Parents today seem to believe it is their right to drag a child all over creation regardless of the health of the child itself.

Given the option of drugging a child or throwing some parents (not all) off a plane, I'd deplane a few mindless parents myself.

Yow! Not that what the FA said isn't true but not something I'd want to hear from a FA where I was a revenue pax. The only thing worse I can think of is a PA:

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome aboard flight ___ with non-stop service to ___. We hope to get you to your destination in one peice today, but if we don't just keep in mind you were going to die sooner or later anyways. Thank you for choosing to spend what may be your last moments on earth with ______ Airlines.

... Than again, that wouldn't have been any worse than the Comair flight from DTW-CVG where the guy next to me spent the entire flight screaming "Is the pilot on drugs or just drunk?!?" and "I just know we're all gonna die" -- and it wasn't even that bumpy (at least in my eyes... than again I'm used to a SF340s and EMB120s (and even the Metro III but it's been years) and while trying to calm him down* I learned that this was his first time on anything besides a 737/A320.

Lincoln
* - someone had to do it and the FA was paying absolutely no attention to him and other pax in the area were starting to look quite uncomfortable-- plus he was annoying the heck out of me

I think some people think flight attendent are all saints. There are good and bad and not too many would make it as brain surgeons or rocket scientists.

Most are polite and pleasant but many are grumpy and vain and ill-mannered. Most, male and female, also wear far too much make-up.

Too much makeup? My airline is always trying to get the females to wear more... and I (male), have never worn any...

Back to dumb flight attendants.... as much as I defend my colleagues, I have to admit that about once a week, I interact with someone, somewhere who is definitely on the "Darwin Awards" candidate list.

The winner this week went to the girl who began screaming at a passenger at 0600 in the morning that he ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, UNDER NO UNCERTAIN TERMS COULD TAKE PHOTOS ON BOARD THE AIRCRAFT AT ANY TIME! "IT'S AGAINST THE LAW, AND WILL RESULT IN YOUR ARREST!" I then got to explain to her that she was WRONG, told her to quit making up shit that didn't exist, and went and apologized to the passenger.

Aaaah, the "sorry my co-worker is a dipshit" speech. Gotta love it.

June last year I was flying from MAD to ZRH on IB and a male F/A went nuts because a passenger was using his cell phone (the flight was still boarding and the "turn off cell phone" announcement had not been made yet). The F/A started screaming things like "If you can't follow rules you'll get kicked out of the flight", "you have no respect for other pax", etc. Even if the F/A had been right, I don't think its proper to scream your lungs out to that poor guy.

in any casem this is nothing compared to the crying kid story, now that is just sick (and illegal).

On a recent flight to Brazil, All i could listen to is how the flight attendant was eager to get her hair styled feet pedicured in RIO. I would not call her dumb, but definately indifferent to he real job duties.

On a seperate flight, I aksed to purchase something from the duty free selection only to be told that it was locked and she was unable to get to the items. She said i should have told them when they walked down the isle with the duty free items... funny thing is, duty free items were never offered on the flight (and i was awake and waiting the whole time)... Just another case of FA's lying to the passengers just to collect an easy paycheck.

PS. A FA once told me that unless your a great liar, you will never be considered as athe lead FA on any flight. I never give them more importance than they deserve. They are just flying waitresses in my eyes.

I love DL and their FAs, but the one thing that really annoys me is they can never seem to work the video monitors correctly. They always are playing the wrong things, (FL100 announcement at pushback, playing the safety annoucement again after flying for 30 minutes, etc) and they often put in the wrong video, in other words, they'll play the east bound movie on a west bound flight, then stop 30 minutes later when someone realizes it. Or they'll start the video and forget that they haven't passed out headphones yet, then restart the video later. The worst is when they're playing the safety video and the sound cannot be heard or worse yet, it's so loud your eardrums almost burst.

Are DL's inflight entertainment systems that complicated??? They appear to be a video cassette player and some monitors, somewhat simple... Funny that when a Song Aircraft is operating a DL mainline flight, they have to have a Song FA on board just to work the Song entertainment system for the DL FAs working the flight. That's probably why DL will never have direct tv on mainline, not only is it too expensive, but the FAs could never get it to work right  Smile

IIRC, there was a F/A that tried to start a fire in the lavatory shortly after 9-11...in the stories following the incident, it was learned that he had been fired from another airline because they felt he posed a threat to the aircraft and passengers.

As far as FA's lying is concerned, I only have one story. Flying RNO-DEN-AUS, the inbound flight to RNO was delayed at its origin SFO. Arriving 2 hours late, they turned the a/c in like 15 minutes. There were no crew changes, etc, so it was obvious the flight crew had originated out of SFO with the a/c. As we neared DEN and everyone realized they really were going to miss their connections, the FA announced that they had been delayed by ATC and thus would not be providing any accomodations for passengers that were stranded in DEN...which was all except for the pax connecting to Chicago (for which they created a new flight) and O&D. When we arrived in DEN, we had 10 minutes before our flight left, but the gate agent said our seats had been given away because we failed to check-in 30 minutes prior...duh...and they instead put us up at a hotel on the WEST side of DEN...(about 1 1/2 hours away...) Needless to say when I checked on the computer, the reason for aircraft delay was "Cabin servicing." Talk about upset...I waited a few days, wrote a letter to UA and received a call a week later..."What would it take to get you to fly United again?" My answer? "Not even a free ticket anywhere in the world could get me to fly your airline again." (I did not say ever, because if they were to get their act together, they might again be a respectable carrier. Lying to your pax to save the company a dime...unacceptable.

ARGinMIA, Thanks for respecting someone's job. And your Flight Attendant friend lied to you because being a lead Flight Attendant is for the dogs. No Flight Attendant wants the job because when shit goes down, guess who everyone looks to. All the complaints, all the babysitting people. It is just not worth it at all, which is why it goes very junior.

So I am a flying waiter? What is the big deal? Why do people have to degrade the job just because they saw poor service on one airline. All of a sudden....all Flight Attendants are dumb waitresses? It is unjustified the reputation we have.

Most of the time people can't handle being told what to do on a aircraft by someone who serves them a drink. It's like a cop does not give you a drink, and tells you to move your car at the same time. It is a total contradiction! It is a big psychological thing for people to be told what to do, then........you Become rude in their eyes. You are no longer a smile with a drink in your hand, and then the classic words come out of their mouths (Waitress in the sky!).

Dumb people are everywhere in every profession. Or you might just be witness to someone's brain fart, we have all had them from time to time. I will concede to the "Dumb flight attendant" stories. However I plan to write a book about bart fart passengers who outnumber dumb flight attendants 50:1.

I've done a few flights with Iberia over the last few months and always find it funny that despite my name (see handle) I still get the FAs speaking incomprehensible Spanish to me! Does Davidson appear a Spanish-esque surname to anyone here? With only two other passengers in the business cabin it's not like they could get me mixed up! Then on the same flight after letting them know I was in fact English and upon asking for Cava (Spanish bubbly....champagne-ish stuff) I got brought.....coffee!

They weren't dumb just not thinking straight that second, it did leave to the purser coming out and teaching me a little Spanish which made a change. I felt confident ordering a Cava the following week.....only for them to run out because my friends got the only two bottle they had before me Big grin

I seem to remember that in this country many years ago that it was common practice to dunk the babies dummy.

Obviously the FA had not realised that things had changed.

I am convinced that when babies cry on a plane, they actually do equalize their ears - though they may not know they are doing this. The cry activity from a baby, IMHO, is a lot of pressure being exchanged and urgent respiration occurs. So I think babies cry maybe b/c they are scared or they had the pressure problem - but solved it by crying - but are still scared. Anyone agree w/ me ?

I've got one.

My first and only ever to date Jetstar flight had 2 offduty FA's across the isle from me.

There was a rather large greek man who was less than happy with the leg room and free seating on that particular 717 flight, and after some very very sloppy service, he finally gave up and said "this plane makes Virgin look like the Queen Elizabeth"

The two dumb fa's in the seat the otherside of the isle didn't get it..... and i had to explain to them what the QE2 was.

Another airline which shall remain nameless had its "australian crew (big hint)" members drugged whilest on a LHR layover. One of the male FA's used to slip date rape drugs in their drinks taking them back to his hotel room where he then rapped them. He's got found out and went to jail. But.... hear's the thing... He must have been really dumb as a straight male if he thought he was gonna get much action doing that job.

Normally I would have passed this thread up but............Even I have had a dumb moment, O.K. I have had a lot of dumb moments. However a fellow flight attendant friend told me about a passenger he was serving who was of Asian decent. He asked the pax if she would like a drink. She replied aren't you nice. He said thank you. She looked at him puzzled. He said can I get you something to drink. She replied aren't you nice. He smiled and said thank you again. She looked even more puzzled. He said can I get you somethig to drink. She looked pissed and yelled aren't you nice. Shocked he said no get you a drink. She said slowly ORANGE JUICE NO ICE! Talk about dumb! See folks, even the smartest people have dumb moments just because of a little miscommunication. That does not necessarily mean there dumb.

I have a great F/A story. I was flying Lead on a flight out of PIT on the 737. After serving first class, I went to the aft galley to collect inflight sales $$ from the B F/A. When I was in the galley, I looked down and both of her doors were disarmed. When I questioned her about this, she told me... NOO, huh-uh...I don't do that. I don't want one of those things to blow. Stupid! I armed the doors, wrote her up, and she was since terminated. But then again, was that stupidity, or just fear of blowing a slide?

Part of the issue with crying children is how we humans are biologically predisposed to have the highest auditory sensitivity to the sound of a baby's crying. It's supposed to annoy/distract us so that we can tend to whatever is causing the crying in the first place.

Cessnapimp's mentioning about how babies/young children cannot (or don't know how to) equalize the pressure on their eardrums (I know this can be quite painful) is enlightening all the same.

Still, I believe that F/A's are an incredibly well-trained and intelligent group of professionals whose reputation shouldn't be tarnished by the actions of a few misfits...

A330fa,

If the slide blew she probably deserved it.....

I have never really had any issues other than a few angry f/a's. On an LH flight from FRA to LAX this one f/a was getting really mad at this kid for yelling swear words out loud. She went up to his father and said that if the kid didn't watch his mouth that she would have the pilot land the aircraft and kick them and the rest of their party off the a/c. He said he would monitor the kid and she stomped of. She came about a row infront of me and tripped over a head set that was left in the aisle. While tripping a lound "MotherF!@@%" was heard thoughout the cabin. I had to laugh but did try to help her out. I felt bad but couldn't help but giggle a bit seeing how she supposedly condoned swearing. She, for some reason, didn't serve the rest of the flight (we were in our last 2 hours of the flight).

On a flight to SJC from ORD on AA a flight attendant, Betty (yes that was her real name), thought it would be a good idea to tell me that if I didn't sit the F down that I would be removed from the flight by force. The part she missed was that I was getting up to allow another passenger, sitting next to me, to get in from going to the bathroom. The man who I let in had a word with the f/a and she later apploized for her words and said that she was just a bit stressed out due to "personal issues".

Other than that I have always had a blast with flight attendants. AC probably boasts some of the nicest crew members I have met. Both on the a/c and off the a/c they hold themselves to their profession and are always willing to help. I staid a night in this hotel near YYZ while attending a camp (I live on the West Coast so I had to arrive a day eary so that I could catch the morning bus up to North Bay, some members might know where that is) and part of the package that my camp got was that we could have access to the top level which had a very nice spotting room and bar which was mainly used for pilots who were getting ready for their next flight.

All the crew members had no issues whatsoever with talking to me about aviation and were actually approached me with questions and comments. F/A's on their flights that I have had (all on the SFO-YYZ-SFO route) have been extremely nice. UA also has some very nice flight attendants. Other than that I can't say a single thing both bad or good about other airlines due to lack of time spent flying the airline.

Thanks again.

Screaming children on transoceanic routes are the most annoying thing I can think of. There should be a separate section curtained off for families traveling with small children for these flights so that they can enjoy each others screaming children together and leave the rest of us passengers alone to get the peace and quiet that we so desparately want.

Thank goodness for noise cancelling headphones.  Smile

For those who bash FA's as being flying waitresses or waiters, try and perform a job where you have to stand for hours on end knowing that statistically one pax out of 100 is mentally unbalanced and that particular person may snap at any given time. My wife is an ex-SAS stew who retired in 1983.

I fly once a week on average, I don't remember running into many dumb FAs, just a few nasty ones. I don't see the need to point out dumb FA's. You run into morons in just about every daily scenario, from bank tellers to store clerks. No need to point out FA's.

I have a good story though. I was flying into the old Hong Kong KaiTak airport on CA once during a nasty storm. The pilot was wide on that sharp turn before landing and we were going to miss the runway, so he put the nose up and we had go back up through the storm and go around to approach from the other end over the water. Anyway, the FA was a young Chinese lady of not more than 25 years of age and she was sitting just across from me in the jump seat. On the way back up we encountered heavy turbulence and there was a bit of panic on board. The FA began crying hysterically and was more panicked than the passengers. So much so that we wound up comforting her more than she was able to make us feel better about the situation. Now that shows that not everyone is made out for the job and that professionals are certainly appreciated.

I am not a flight attendant, don't work in the industry. I just FLY2LIM a lot to see my family and to a few other places with my family. After reading this thread, I am convinced that the problem is not dumb flight attendants but incredibly stupid passengers. Again, my opinion.
I strongly recommend that everyone fly American Airlines (no, I don't work for them either) because EVERY TIME I fly on them there are flight attendants that are nice, respectable, professional, and they even smile a lot. Or maybe I'm just a lucky person who walks in and starts treating the entire cabin crew with respect, manners, and I even give them a smile.
The Canadian poster was right, some people need to get a life. You want good service, show a positive side.

One time, on a JFK-PBI flight on B6, I went to the aft galley to walk a little bit. While I was back there, I struck up a conversation with a F/A. She said that shes been working with B6 sinse they first started. I asked her, how do you like the A320? She said, B6 does not use the A320, we use the 737. I was in shock when she said that. I just said, Ohh, ok.

To this day, I don't know if she was joking or not. She definately didn't seem like she was joking as she went on how much she liked it. If she wasn't joking (which I think she wasn't), than she has to be pretty dumb.
