A380 Cockpit = Sunroom?

Mon Jan 17, 2005 11:04 am

Hey all,

Just a personal observation. Take a look at this A380 photo and enlarge it.

Now, is it me, or is the width of this cockpit a rather large dimention. Using the R1 door for reference, it would almost appear that the pilots would not be able to touch thier respective windows!

Now that's big!

Your thoughts?

I'm not sure if you can really tell from a photo. I guess it would be a rather large cockpit though.
Bit off topic, but are there any photos of the A380 cockpit?

Has Airbus published any internal shots (flightdeck, cabin, etc) yet ?

I assume the flightdeck is the same as an A340, but bigger and a few more screens. Note sure if they also plan to include a jacuzzi in there for the pilots  Smile
By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?

@Boeing_nut:

you cannot use the R1 door as a reference, as the flight deck is actually located between the upper and the lower deck.

No cockpit, but here are some interior shots. (I haven't seen these before, but they could be just mockups.)

Dazeflight,

I do know the location of the cockpit is mid level. I should have been more specific. I used the R1 door as reference to a six foot tall man. Supposedly, a man's arm reach (both extended outward) is nearly the same as he is tall. Take the door, move it horizontally, then divide it in two. Now, super impose that across the windshield. That's a pretty good reach to get to the aft window on his side, eh?

Longhaulheavy,

Those Drudge shots are definitely mock-up. I Remember seeing the same pics while researching the a/c for a research report a few years back.

Boeing Nut, Its going to be hard to judge dimensions from the image you used even with the clever calculations you've done, try this pic instead. Its the cockpit under construction. It not only shows the size of the windows. But it also shows the cockpit platform to be about 1 - 1.2 Meters above the main deck.

But yes those windows are massive, its almost reminds me of the DC10/MD11 side windows. Big grin

There is a much newer representation of the cockpit on the Airbus website somewhere.

Will try to find it.

I'd say, this picture (from Reply 9) rather confirms what Boeing nut says. The cockpit is... well, BIG. Definitely bigger than of any other passenger airplane (BTW, was the 777 cockpit the biggest until now - since 747 actually has a "narrowbody" cockpit, and L1011/DC10/MD11 are slightly less wide?)

Here is a question, I'm not sure if anyone has asked before. On the second level, what is going to be in all that space before the passenger windows start? If it's a crew rest area, it's jhonkin' huge! I know the stairs are over there, but it seems like a lot of space for just stairs or a crew rest.
