Kalitta 747 At CLT

Tue Jan 18, 2005 3:25 am

Did any of the CLT spotters catch the Kalitta 747 that was at the Charlotte/Douglas cargo ramp this morning? It chartered by the Christian relief organization Samaritan's Purse.

Was scheduled to depart late this morning for Southeast Asia.

Didn't see it but I did see a Polar 744 there in the evening about 3-4 weeks ago.

Wish I could have seen it. 747's are rare at CLT. I never seem to be around to catch them. I have even seen an AN124...twice! Still no 747. Heck, there are not even any 747's in the photo database for CLT. Not surprising though I guess. The last scheduled passenger 747 service into CLT ended in 1993 when Lufthansa pulled out the first time. All we get now are the cargos.

Oh well, guess I will keep trying...

Next time you see a Kalitta at CLT, go to www.kalittaair.com and click on schedule. This gives you a list of all the flights that day with tail numbers.

However there is another way of getting the answer.

Send an email to r e q a c a r s@antonakis.co.uk (take out the spaces!)

Make sure it's in plain text (if you use AOL for emails it won't work) and the subject line should be 17-01-2005

In the body type CKS9705 and nothing else.

You should get your answer back within a few minutes.

You can do this for any flight you see anywhere in the world , just make sure the flight numbers are on separate lines and there is nothing else in the body of the email.

Well, on Monday, not only was the Kalitta there, but so was a Polar 743! They were parked within a few feet of each other... When was the last time there were two 74s at CLT? Maybe never... The Kalitta is at least the third 74 at CLT this year... Very unusual. The Polar was there after making an unscheduled landing early Sunday morning due to a mechanical problem... Or so I was told.

I currently have a photo in the queue of the Polar 743. My luck hasn't been great lately, but if it gets accepted, I guess it will be the first shot of a 747 at CLT in the database... Unless somebody else got the same shot...

Guys

Was fortunate enough to taxi behind the Kalitta 747 this past Monday. I was on a USAirways ERJ 145 bound for Memphis (around 12:55pm). Let me tell you, it was surreal. Im not sure if the pilot was awed at the plane in front of him as we seemed way to close. As we were waiting for our takeoff, (Kalitta was 3rd in line, we were 4th), the engines on that mother caused our plane to vibrate slightly. Poor pilot on our plane must have had his foot on the brakes big time just so the plane doesnt roll back. The perspective on my side was awesome. If you look up, you see very tip of the vertical stabilizer making you appreciate how tall the 747 is and how low to the ground you are when you are in an ERJ. The most awesome sight of all was when the 747 turned onto the runway. I wouldnt call the Kalitta 747 the handsomest plane in the world (the livery is post 60s, early 70s with the text Kalitta Air too big for its britches) but wow, it still took my breath away. From the holding area (Im not sure what the right term is just short of the runway) those who were seated on the left switched to the right just to see the thing roll and takeoff. The roar of the engines was amazing but the most impressive was how graceful the 747 looked on its climb. To have the 747 against the backdrop of a beautiful sunny, cloudless Charlotte made me feel like a kid again.

I watched the Kalitta climb out from my front porch... I'm about 8nm or so to the SE of the field, so I was watching it from quite a distance with my binoculars...

I caught it as it climbed through about 1500 or so... It just looked like it was barely hanging in the air... Then it slowly turned right, and started to pick up speed. I know you guys around some of the big international airports see this all the time, but here at CLT it was quite a treat.

I watched it for maybe seven or eight minutes, then it disappeared behind my neighbor's house, and that was that...

Those Kalittas really are painted ugly, but from a distance it was very distinctive, particularly contrasting to the blue and gray USAirways planes that are "swarming the hive" everyday...
