Walk From KIAD To National Air And Space Museum?

Tue Jan 18, 2005 7:42 am

I am going to fly into KIAD Jan 19. I will park at the fbo (sig). Is it possible to walk from the fbo to the national air and space museum? If so is it an easy walk? Thanks.

It would be at least a four mile walk along the shoulder of a highway. I would not recommend it. Check with Signature to see if they can take you there in their van. Be aware that the presidential inauguration is the next day and the FBO's might be overwhelmed during that time and might not be able to give you a ride. Other than that, a taxi or rental car might be the best option.

Auto transportation from IAD is required, unless you enjoy walking through wilderness and possibly encountering a deer along the way to the museum.

Do you have death wish? If a truck doesn't hit you some gung-ho cop who thinks you are a security risk will!

I'd forgotten about the Udvar-Hazy center at IAD and was thinking "Four miles to the Mall???" It's actually 2.5 miles according to the site http://www.nasm.si.edu/visit/directions_uhc.cfm . I'd recommend taking a taxi there and getting the taxi service number to have them pick you up on the way back. Dulles is not pedestrian-friendly at ALL, don't bother trying.

When the museum opened, they had a free shuttle from the terminal (which is within walking distance of Signature). I'm not sure if it still runs, but it's worth looking into if you're going.

The Smithsonian website makes mention of taking a cab - around $20 from recollection - for those interested, see a few pics on the following link..

http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~rupert they are on page 2

The museum still needs to improve on a few things - including better lighting imho so that pictures can be more easily taken - though I know the light may damage the aircraft so catch 22 i guess.

However as you can't take in tripods, some fixed ( to the railings etc ) camera mounts would not go astray!

Taxi is about $10 each way from the terminal to the museum...the ride is along highways, so walking isn't the best idea...

I am thinking of taking a day trip down there this spring, and have a few questions. I know there are 2 separate locations for the museum- The National Mall, and Dulles museum. Is one more worthwhile than the other? Can both be done during a one day trip only? Are there separate admissions, the website is a bit clunky with smaller details.

There is a shuttle bus scheduled from downtown museum to the one at IAD. I think it is/was $5 for a rt, but I may be wrong.
Last Jan I took taxi from IAD to museum and taxi driver seemed a bit put off to only go that short of a distance, so in my mind, I say screw the taxi. But as mentioned, IAD sucks for walking or any cheap way around. You would be better off going to DCA then take metro into town then shuttle out to U-H Annex.

Admission to the NASM is free, like all Smithsonian museums. At Udvar-Hazy there is a $12 fee for parking. There is a shuttle that runs from the NASM on the mall to Udvar- Hazy.

I personally prefer the Udvar-Hazy museum over the one at the Mall. The best part is the observation deck, which is 7 stories up and over looks Dulles.
