US Airways FLL Expansion?

Tue Jan 18, 2005 1:13 pm

Does anybody know if the expansion for the "mini hub" in FLL is under way and are any Europe routes in the work? Also if any US employees can tell me how long the hiring process for US usually takes? And people can keep the negative US comments to themselves since they will be around for a little while.

US Airways flies from LGW to FLL!

Wow I didn't know that what kind of aircraft is it? Also when did that start I knew they flew PHL-LGW and CLT-LGW.

Thanks supa7e7 I actually got a contingent offer from them for FLL but that was a month ago so I was hoping a US employee could shed some light on if that's the norm or should I grab my phone and dial HR.

I just checked US website and they don't have direct flights to LGW from FLL so back to the drawing board on that.

They don't have direct flights from FLL to Europe and never will. No one does. I thought US FLL expansion was for the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Northeast something around 60 flights a day in mid-February(??) Will US have a crewbase in FLL?

Well Azul320 that would be a great way to gain some business having direct routes to Europe. From my understanding the expansion is like you said the Caribbean, Latin America, and more flights to the Northeast however they also wanted to add even more so I wasn't sure if Europe had been added to those plans.

People, the first link was to another thread which had a bunch of jokes and one had the LGW - FLL thing. Sorry for the confusion.

Never say never. An FLL-LGW flight would be great use of a 767 during the winter season, when PHL-SNN/GLA/VCE/BCN/DUB go on haitus.

I wouldn't hold my breathe for it to start, but I think it would work.

Hawk44, in more direct response to your original question, the hiring process can take between about 10 days and a month due to background checks and fingerprinting. Before you can actually start work, you will probably also have to clear a seperate FBI background check with the airport security office, also involving fingerprints. How fast they scoot you through the process depends on how critically low on workers they are. Regardless, if you're hired and screened fine, you'll still have up to a month of training. They could be doing training in FLL, I have no idea, but nearly all training that I know of takes place in CLT or PHL.

The full schedule starts sometime in February; it'll be interesting to see how it works out.

Thanks USrampleadstl, I think my background finished about a week ago at least that's what the girl said when I called HR. She had no idea about the training schedule. When at the hiring event one person said they would train at FLL but the person that did my interview told me CLT I really don't mind either one I just want to learn how to load those birds!!!

You're joining the ramp? Excellent! In that case chances are better that they'll train in FLL since there's less initial training (but a lot of subsequent stuff depending on how well you're doing with the easy stuff). Memorize your city codes--they're not kidding that you have to know them. Other than that, all you'll do for awhile is handle bags. Is it a mainline job or on the express side? I know PSA is going to operate a few flights through there, but not sure how the ramp is going to function.

MAH- Maybe a MAD-FLL flight on a 767 would work better for connections further South?

Yup either Ramp or Customer Assistance Rep. Yeah I have been learning my city codes thank goodness for Airliners.net I'm also getting them down on index cards. Is training hard stuff or easy if you pay attention and study? Thanks again for answering all my questions.

Training is pretty easy. Some people find SABRE confusing at first; you either get used to it and good at it or you avoid it like the plague. A remarkable amount of your training time will be spent with SAIs (SABRE Assisted Instruction), which you will come to hate no matter how much you like anything else. Also, a whole library of corny videos awaits you. Ramp vs. CSA... I've never done CSA, but I'm sure I'll always like the ramp a little better... it's just a really thrilling feeling being out on an airline ramp, and the opportunities for doing cool stuff (well, cool stuff to me usually involves radios, computers, and machinery) are a little greater. I've spent quite a bit of time at the Ops desk in STL since I remember the stupid computer commands and type fast.

Oh, here, have a helpful toy: http://www.jablog.com/codes/learn.php - I wrote this when I started at US Airways last May (I was a computer science major before I became addicted to the airline industry).

Also as stated before on a previous thread that MAH4546 started back when the annoucement was made FLL is a great opportunity for US to get a jump on some of the Latin America routes which here in South Florida could be very valuable

Anyone know if DL will ever start an FLL-CDG route. Would that route work?

I wouldn't count on that since DL has the ATL hub plus most of their operations at FLL are from Song.

Delta flew Orlando-Paris Orly one summer in the early 90s and the route never returned. Delta seems to have given up almost totally on international and US virgin island routes from Florida having dropped MCO-MEX, MCO-FRA, MCO-STT, MCO-STX, MIA-FRA, MIA-LGW, FLL-NAS and FLL-FPO as well as planned flights from Orlando to Central America over the past 10 years or so.

I wouldn't count on that since DL has the ATL hub plus most of their operations at FLL are from Song.

Only 17 of Delta's 60+ daily FLL flights are operated by Song. That is less than 30% of Delta's FLL services. Delta operates almost as many daily FLL-ATL flights as all of Song's FLL operations combined.

Delta actually was looking at starting FLL-CDG prior to September 2001, though the plans were axed.

I would not expect Delta to start the route, but never say never. There is a lot of profit potential on the route. The market between Miami and Paris is very profitable thanks to a lot of high-yielding leisure traffic and the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area's large French population, which is very wealthy and travels between SoFla and France often.

The problem would be that Miami is still considered "the" European gateway, so it's they would have to advertise the service well. About a year ago, there was a new French airline proposing trans-Atlantic service from Nice. Their two US destinations were to be Newark and Fort Lauderdale. The airline never flew (no surprise), but it shows how important the market between the area and France is.
