Most Flights Between An Airline's Hubs

Wed Jan 19, 2005 4:24 am

Which airline has the most daily flights between its hubs? This would have to be the same airline operating from one of its hubs to another one of its hubs.

For example, NW currently operates 14 flights a day between DTW-MSP and 16 in the other direction.

Any others close to this?

AA operates 18 daily flights between DFW and ORD. All are on MD80s except for one 777.

AA also has 15 dailies between ORD and STL, and 14 dailies between LAX (maybe not technically a hub) and DFW.

Looks like CO operates 20 between IAH and EWR. 8 served by mainline and 12 served by COEX with one stop. I don't know if you were counting the express flights or not.

I don't think the one-stop flights should count ... where are the stops, by the way? I wasn't aware that CO operated through RJ service on IAH-EWR.

Well me neither about the one stop flights, but it since it is the same flight number thought it was worth a shot. According to the schedule, they stop in BNA, OKC, PIT, STL, MEM, RDU, MCI, XNA, BHM, HSV, TUL and CHS.

Later,

United operates a huge number of flights between IAD, SFO, ORD, DEN, and LAX.

I think DEN-ORD is something like 17 daily, DEN-LAX is 15 or 16.

The difference is that most of UA's hub-hub is on a widebody.

Horizon. 32 non-stop flights each way per day between their SEA and PDX hubs.

(Don't complain about my answer - the OP didn't exclude regional airlines, prop flights, or the duration of the flight from the question, and QX certainly operates hubs at both SEA and PDX.)

Air Canada YYZ-YUL, 20-26 flights a day depending on day of the week.

Aircraft ranging from CRJ to A333/343 (and 345 but not scheduled) size. Mostly A32x though.

Even though they don't do "hubs", what about Southwest between Phoenix and Las Vegas? Or Houston and Love Field?

While we're on that...what about America West between Phoenix and Las Vegas out of curiosity?

Both are probably no where near Horizon's 32 from Seattle to Portland...but just curious what the numbers were.

As of today's schedule, CO flies 8 flights daily IAH-EWR, and 9 daily flights EWR-IAH. These are all flown mainline, ranging from 733's to 772's, and everything in between.

IB numbers are impressive!

Indeed! The sheer magnitude of the frequencies of IB's hub-to-hub flights has caused me to wonder: how full (or empty) are IB's MAD-BCN-MAD flights on a typical day? From the information I can find on Sabre, all of these flights are operated by IB's mainline types, MD87 and larger. Does anyone have the pax numbers/average load factor on these flights, even if only an educated estimate based on experience as a pax or employee?

UA does 15 a day each way LAX-SFO. I would think the IB or the Rio-Sao Paulo shuttles would take the cake though.

Tango-Bravo:

I don't have those numbers, but I can tell you that during a good part of 2003 I was a frequent traveller on the MAD-BCN route, and every single flight I was on was completely packed.

I remember I read somewhere a long time ago that IB carried about 3 million people in a year on that route, but don't pay much attention to that....or was it on Latin American routes?

Yes Dear, if you count all kind of "thru-traffic" numbers:
IB846 = IB 6990
IB2770 = IB1146
IB1346 = IB2780
IB2750 = IB1546
IB6402 = IB2606
IB1646 = IB2730
IB2734 = IB1746
IB1846 = IB2740
IB2716 = IB2046
IB2146 = IB2726
IB2760 = IB2246
This is for Sun 20Feb. Bringing down the number of flights to 28.
No doubt ! Still very impressive.

UA used to operate 33 daily flights between SFO and LAX during the United Shuttle days. Flights departed every hour, every half hour during peak weekday mornings and evenings.

QF operates 32 flights per day between SYD and MEL (varies some though between 30 and 35 depending on day)

The most impressive thing though is that all but two of these flights are on widebody airplanes, which means that QF holds the record for most seats on nonstop flights between any two airports by any single airline in the world- quite impressive. Even though there are more travelers between some cities in Japan, they are divided up between airports and carriers, which is why QF beats them.

I've been on those IB MAD<->BCN trips during the weekday, and they were full. They were also either the continuation or origin of international flights.

If you want to include LGA and BOS as DL hubs, they are focus cities at least, here are the #'s...
LGA: 16X on weekdays...used to be mainly M80s back in the day, but now only 4 flights are M80 and 1 764 and 1 762...the rest are 757s
2889 seats total btw!
goes down to 11X Saturday and 13X Sunday
BOS: 12X weekdays (goes down to 9X Sa and Su)

Also, jetBlue has kinda sorta maybe a hub at FLL and they fly up to 20+X on peak travel periods!
NEXT FLIGHT: FLL-ATL-HPN on FL

A previous poster scribed:

Yes, I considered the MAD-BCN flights when counting up numbers, but I too saw a number of variances in daily vs. weekday-only vs. thru-traffic vs. flights operating only 2 or 3 days per week, etc., but also pondered whether BCN is really a "hub" in the sense of scheduled banks of flights mainly for the purpose of connections, or if the connections that took place were of the natural variety, as a by-product of Barcelona being a major city in its own right.

Is BCN an operating hub (not just available connections, but flights scheduled purposely for connecting) for IB? And does anyone have an accurate count of the actual pieces of metal flying for IB between MAD-BCN exclusive of the same flight carrying dual flight numbers?

Cheers.

hmmm lets look at WN between DAL and HOU.

1 flight every half hour from 5am until 10pm. 2 x 17 = 34. all in 737's. so, around 4500 seats per day go just from DAL-HOU. If you double that (for the 4500 that go from HOU-DAL) then around 9000 seats go back and forth everyday.

Nope. Good try, though!  Smile

First flight of the day from DAL to HOU is at 06:15 and the last departs at 21:00, and they don't fly consistently every half hour. There are no flights at 10:30, 13:30, or 20:30, but there are a few that leave at :15 past the hour. If you count the actual pieces of metal WN puts into the air between the two cities it comes to: 29

Cheers.

as for the least flights-- CO to CLE has got to be up there. Only 6 day to ewr and iah, nothing on anything bigger than a 738. That's not much more service than IAH and EWR have to non-hub cities. This speaks to the fact that CLE doesn't really offer any unique destinations compared to the bigger hubs.

Avianca BOG-MDE and BOG-CLO, each have 13 daily flights.

BOG-CLO: 11 Md-83, 2 757s.
BOG-MDE: 10 Md-83, 2 757s and 1 F-50.

Though MDE and CLO are only focus cities.
