A380F To ANC

Wed Jan 19, 2005 12:35 pm

Just reported on KTUU, NBC affiliate in Anchorage. Both Fedex and UPS are considering A380F service to Anchorage.

I have looked for the link at ktuu.com but it's not posted yet. Will look and post it when available.

It's a hub and pilot base for 5X (might be for FX also) freight, I'm pretty sure they'll be flying into ANC.

Hold it right there.

Wasn't the longer range of the A380-800F designed to avoid a fuel stop at ANC on tranpacific flights in the first place?  Confused

Yup I thought so too RayChuang . . . but as has been pointed out this is a FedEx and UPS hub . . . that might be the reason . . . both are expanding ANC operations as well. We had a FedEx flight simulator here, wonder if we'll get one for the 380?

This is however, cool in that I thought there'd be quite a wait before I got see a 380 . . . .  Smokin cool

Has Airbus released any charts outlining the payload vs. distance that the plane can fly? What payload amount were they listing to operate nonstop? It could be like the 744F which can fly nonstop across the Pacific, but with less payload....granted from what I understand payload weight is not that big of a deal with Fed Ex and UPS...more concerned with volume.

ANC is not JUST a fuel stop. It's a hub. In fact is more a hub than it it a fuel stop these days.

What is the route network like for Fed Ex and UPS out of ANC? I can see ANC as being a hub for airlines like NW because from ANC, their 74Fs spread out across Asia to the west and across the US to the east so that is their only transfer hub. I am unfamiliar with Fed Ex and UPS and if they have similar spread or if flights from ANC concentrate to their hubs in MEM, OAK, ONT, SDF, etc. Does a significant amount of stuff get transferred between planes in ANC?

A fair amount. Planes come into ANC from across the US, then get transferred around onto planes to Asian destinations.

Its not so much about the fuel as it is aggregation. Clearly, there will be nonstop flights to Asia from places like MEM, but sometimes to fill up such a large plane you need the contents of several smaller ones.

Ok, so Fed Ex does have a sort of consolidation operation there. That is sort of what I was curious about. I just was not sure how much stuff really gets transferred since I was not sure if they consolidated stuff there or in Memphis.

Thanks.
