North American To Leave Aguadilla

Wed Jan 19, 2005 2:37 pm

Hey, all. According to an article in the business section of today's El Nuevo Día (in Spanish), North American Airlines plans to ends operations at Aguadilla, Puerto Rico's Borinquen Airport as of the 31st of this month.

The reason given was that because of jetBlue flying the same BQN-JFK route, NNA had to lower their fares to match B6's and thus made the route unprofitable for them. Now with NAA leaving, this leaves BQN with only B6, CO and Boston-Maine/Pan Am 3 (if they're still around).

I suppose it was just a matter of time. With three airlines flying to the same area out of a small airport, eventually one was going to lose money. Let's see if 2005 brings someone else to BQN and hopefully fly someplace other than New York.

Not suprising. I would have started shaking when they announced. NAA just can't compete.

It makes you wonder how long their Santiago and Santo Domingo services to the Dominican Republic will last, seeing how Jet Blue also flies those same routes. Even with a large Puerto Rican population in New York, North American just couldn't handle the pressure.

well I really hope that we add a second round trip to BQN because even with the awful schedule we have, this city does really well for us and it would be great to add a second round trip.

NAA pulled out of Santo Domingo in October 2004. Service to Santiago will also be suspended along with Aguadilla on Janurary 31, 2005. As a result, the only scheduled service for NAA out of New York-JFK will be to Georgetown, Guyana.
