Any details on what improvements are being made to Terminal 1A? Are they adding aero-bridges etc..?

I for one lack in faith when it comes to India and bom/del airports.
Of course they will eventually be able to handle the a380........ But they will need to do a lot more than taxi widening for that.
I was thinking rebuild the whole terminal? Let’s hope that it happens WELL, not just happens.

Not sure if BOM's rwy 27/09 would accomodate an A380 with its current length (11500 ft if I'm not mistaken) with not much space on either end to lengthen. Parking - possibly for 1 specimen.....maybe a special extention to terminal 2C sufficient to park 1 A380. BOM badly needs another terminal for international flights, what with the new Indo-US agreement and 9W S2 ambitions.

But with slums surrounding the airport (all encroached on IAAI land) and the politicians (Kripashankar Singh & Nawab Malik) from Mr Praful Patel's own party and alliance partner spoiling the party everytime the 'demolition' word is taken, it will be a huge task to free space around the airport for expansion of runway, new terminals etc. The refurbishment of terminal 1B is a welcome step, somehow the 'ground experience' of term 1A (Indian Airlines) just didn't match with the 'air experience' of IC. Now 1B's ground experience and air experience with pvt airlines will hopefully match ! As far as I know Term 1B will not have aerobrdiges since (a) they would be able to accomodate only 4 - 5 and (b) if they do it would reduce tarmac space which is badly needed to accomodate non-IC aircraft incl 9W, S2, DN and soon KF.

Delhi has much more space for expansion of runway, accomodating new parking bays, as well as a new terminal if required. So an A380 at Delhi is much easier to achieve than Bombay but more traffic will come from BOM for sure.

Whatever happens, if the 380 manages to land and stop in time, it will be an event as great as, if not greater, than the visit of the 747 in the early 70's and a treat to us Indian aviation buffs.

I thought the 380 will be able to land on every runway a 747 is able to land??  Confused

Pran: Brilliant post!!  Big thumbs up WOndering how long Kingfisher Air will be able to survive.. if everything was so easy

Aw.. my post got the chop. Any ways this news is from Dr. M himself who told newspersons in BLR yesterday about his interest in the A380 and that KFA will be launched on 07MAY which is also his kid's b'day.

The A380 can operate out of any runway that can take the B747. The taxiways will have to however be widened to prevent the MLG from ending up in the grass as well as to prevent ingestion of debris into the outer engines.

Nothing Seems to be happening to suggest the Taxiways being Widened.
