Official: EasyJet Opens Basel Base

Fri Jan 21, 2005 2:25 am

easyJet will base 3 A-319 in Basel-Mulhouse effective June05. Everything confirmed by easyJet, local radio and news.

Flights will be operated by easyJet Switzerland and the new destinations will be presented later this year.

easyJet is creating 180 new flying jobs and 350 ground staff jobs.

The flights to LPL, SXF, LTN and STN will be unaffected by this and will still be served by easyJet UK.

Thank you easyJet!!!!!!

Well, finally U2 decided to put their money in BSL. I am glad to hear that an airline will develop the aiport, since it started to look kind of lonely, specially after LX's decision to close LHR-BSL. I was on the last LX flight to LHR before BA took the route and it was sad to see that no more LX A320's will fly to BSL...

Too bad I won't be able to benefit from U2's BSL expansion, since I decided not to work for Novartis, but you never know!!

Hi Rojo hope youre doing fine.

LX A320 will still fly to BSL but only on behalf of tour operators.
Anyway, we dont miss them much. BA is better for BSL...

But back to the topic, what do you guys think. What routes will easyJet start out of BSL.

I think it will be Dortmund, Barcelona and Rome for sure. Then maybe Budapest or Bratislava and maybe Nice.

Too bad it wasn't earlier in the year, as I recently booked a flight from Geneva to Gatwick on U2 to end my vacation in Switzerland early next month... I wanted to find a swiss carrier to fly out with, but couldn't afford anything other than EasyJet UK.

Ugh! In the past year, I've flown London-Basel and London-Venice on Swiss and BA, and paid out the wazoo for those tickets. Only a few months after my trips, EZY launched the service for about a third of the price. Guess they've been following people like me!

SQ7345, indeed a very good day for EAP. I think I will cut my LX Travel Club card into a hundred pieces and will send it to Mr. Franz...

Airblue: Thanks for sharing your ideas.

I heard that they might fly BSL to VIE. This would be the first route for easyJet to Vienna!

I think they're planning on cutting all their flights out of CPH, so perhaps rule that one out.

Interesting to hear about CPH. I heard that the SXF/CPH route is doing very well. If they leave it will be most likely because of the fees.

As for BSL, easyJet now already speaks of basing aircraft number 4-6 here in 2006...  Smile

Something that I just realized. With basing aircraft at BSL, easyJet Switzerland goes back to the roots. easyJet Switzerland is the successor of BSL based charter airline TEA Switzerland.  Smile

P.S.: I voted for Dortmund, Paris, Milan, Barcelona, Rome and Dublin (wont happen though).

It will be interesting to see how AF would react if easy is going to start a Paris route...

RIX is an interesting one. Would be damn nice to see this one although I think it will not happen.  Sad

They could try to add MPL with one daily flight - since the crash of Air Littoral MPL is in dare need for new airlinks to alsace...

easyJet said that they want to fly BSL-ORY 6x daily (AF already has 8 daily flights), but they dont get so many slots.

Never thought about MPL. Agree that this airport is underserved so it is maybe a candidate for a future easyJet destination.

I think it's really great news for BSL.
That will hopefully open up the new terminal on the swiss side of the airport earlier than 2007.

My guesses are for the new routes:

BSL-ORY
BSL-MAD
BSL-AMS

But I sure as hell hope that they will keep their fingers from the CPH route.
I wanna be able to still fly QI down here once I move back to Denmark  Big grin

I wouldn't be so certain about BSL-AMS starting. Certainly the demand exists but the airport is expensive. The only non-UK AMS route is GVA. GVA-ORY is going down to 3x daily, so I guess one of the frequencies will go to BSL.

I'm pretty certain we will see BUD, CIA, ORY, CGN, ALC, PMI And NCE from BSL. Those routes seem to have a good potential from BSL/ MLH.

Agree with Runway23. I dont think they will go to AMS. Especially now that KLM and Air France are going to launch this route as well.
For the same reason, high taxes, they will not start a route to CPH.

Call me crazy, but I think they could start a BSL to GVA route, maybe twice daily. They could do these flights early in the morning and late in the evening for a higher fleet utilisation. You only need to be cheaper than the SBB train which is really not difficult.

GVA-BSL is about the same distance as the present BFS-GLA but that only works because of the body of water separating the two.

Approaching it from a fare angle, the present easyJet average fare is about Sfr100 excl. taxes and I believe that is what any route has to sustain that to work. Given the train is Sfr32/64 per way (depending if you have the 1/2 or not), I have my doubts. Even take the lowest fare of say Sfr15, add Sfr20 of taxes and you are already above what most pay on the train.

Not to mention the journey time and loss of flexibility.

I’d like to see it, but I have my doubts.

Jeremiah

Runway23, please send some snow to Ireland. Big grin

Yes thats true.
Maybe they should just try it.
For business people its almost impossible to do a trip to GVA, do some business, and go back on the same day. They might pay high fares if they can save hotel costs.

I have my doubts too. But it would work with a smaller plane.

And Runway23, dont you listen to Teahan, he said you should send that snow to Ireland, not to BSL  Sad Big grin

A BSL-GVA wouldn't be that expensive for easyjet to set up. GVA offers landing fees for any airline that starts a new destination up and I believe BSL does the same, which could help the route make a profit. It may get some subsidies from the swiss government for linking up regions, that is if they actually do such subsidies. Otherwise they could always try the trick with France as the route can be flown both to and from Switzerland or France.

All,

Interesting stuff indeed.

Please let me add my 5 rappen:

I'd add my reservations on BSL to GVA, which is only three hours on the train and also add the fact that many Swiss residents have half price rail Abos for CHF 250 for two years. Glasgow to Belfast by land and sea is a bit inconvenient, although would be quite exciting for young children, I suppose.

Selfishly, I'd like to see them flying to GLA, the nearest city to my birthplace although I cannot see it myself. I can only speculate that they head south, where Mediteranean types may enjoy the Alps in the winter and the mid-Europeans some sun in the summer. Not that BSL is really an Alpine airport, however I'm sure you can see the point I am making here.

So maybe, Athens, Palma, Madrid & Valencia; all that they also serve Berlin with. Maybe they can do some whizzy scheduling things to maximise plane utilisation?

Cheers

As you are speaking about the Alps. When I was at EAP on Saturday there was a tourist bus from Graubuenden, bringing English tourists for the Stansted or Liverpool flight. I was a bit surprised because Graubuenden is 3 or 4 hours away but it shows that they chose BSL as their Swiss entry point if they can fly for a good price.

They will sign contract with Novartis in the next few days, the second largest Swiss company. Whenever a same day return is possible, Novartis will book easyJet in the future.

Well done easyJet and Novartis. It is also a sign towards Swiss that shows that Novartis is supporting airlines who serve this airport and region well.

Mate, if you think CFF is pricey you obviously haven't travelled on the UK's sorry excuse for a rail network in the last couple a decades! With the demi (which almost all CH residents possess I would guess) the rail journey is cheap and pretty fast (max 2h48m) and frequent (twice/hour). Despite having to change trains, I think EZY would find it very hard to compete on price, journey times, flexibility and freqency. Vive le CFF!

RJ100,

Interesting what Novartis are saying. In a recent Basler Zeitung article, posted on my company's intranet site, if my German translation holds, they were saying the likes of "Where our employees fly to most is a matter to be contained within Novartis...."; this in response to where they would like EasyJet to fly to from Basel.

Whilst we said, London, then Paris, although (& I can share a joke with you), in my part of the company the truth is really "Shanghai Pu Dong"!

Cheers

Buckieboy

PS Agree that it is good for the region as a whole. BA & LX don't give enough value for money in my experience.

Buckieboy: I was reading that article too . Novartis has agreements with BA on the London route and easyJet can not offer a same day return to London so far.

Flighttime: I see your point. BTW I have travelled on British railways. Thats why I use the plane for domestic UK service Big grin
My idea was that easyJet could use the aircraft better with adding such a route. For instance they could make 4 returns a day instead of 3. I dont think it will happen though. Oh and the trains run nostop between BSL and GVA, every hour.
But GVA-BSL would definitely be a route for a smaller carrier, maybe Darwin or flybaboo. I know a lot of foreign people that need to do business in both BSL and GVA and need a fast connection.

Best regards,
RJ100

I dont know Flying_Belgian. Unfortunately the Saab2000 crews need to stay in the company until at least winter schedule 05. And easyJet Switzerland starts flying here in June. So they dont have time to do A319 training etc.

Hopefully they can apply for jobs for aircraft 4-6 next year.
