According to gazeta.ru, it was a leased AN-12 (Four engine tuboprop). The local airline operating it was "Sky Cabs".

The plane had its first unsuccessful landing attempt in a severe weather (rain storm). Second attempt, after 45 mins in air, ended up in crush. Possible causes: weather or fuel shortage.

5 out of 8 on board were reported to be Russian crew.

Was there any mention of the location?; was it at Bandaranaike International, or was it in a remote airfield? I remember seeing these aircraft parked at CMB on various occasions.
