EK Looking For More A340s?

Fri Jan 21, 2005 3:14 am

I was just browsing through a few of the PPRUNE forums and (on the Middle East section) came across a rumour that EK is apparently to add four more A340-300s.

Great news if true, but (a) from where and (b) to supplement existing capacity or add new routes?

I ask this because A340s (and indeed A330-200s) are in extremely short supply at the moment and off hand, I can't think of anyone wanting to part with theirs.

Presumably EK is still actively looking for new(ish) aircraft, in addition to the many it has on order. The only aircraft I can think of which are available in significant numbers, at short notice, are United's parked 777s (less the three which have gone to AI). These are, of course, PW powered engines, which mightn't suit EK.

Alternatively, what about the 777s deferred by AA and DL, all of which will be RR powered; might EK reach a deal with Boeing for these?

Anyone know what their plans for fleet additions are, this year?

I was reading that Air Namibia were after ex LH or AF early builds but these wouldn't be on much use to EK one would think. ILFC had a few in store but again not the upgraded X version. As ever with EK we'll just have to see how what happens next!

I mean, they could get LH or VS -311s.

I'm not sure they want them, but they could get them.

What I wonder, they are getting more 345s this year, and still no additional North American destinations confirmed.
Also ten 773ERs are joining the fleet this year, where will these go and where is the range needed? I know FRA, DUS and JNB will be getting 773s next winter, but will these be ERs?

I doubt that FRA, DUS, or JNB will get 773ERs. They're such short hops that I'd imagine a 773A can go out max payload and make it just fine in both directions.

I continue to be amused by EK's order for large fleets of both the 773ER and A340-600.

I am also curious as to why EK hasn't been able to press forward with US expansion. Maybe they do need a few more frames, first, as their current fleet is quite busy with Australia, Japan, and JFK.

But the question remains ---Where are they going to fly these many aircrafts.

However, i want someone to confirm this--A news report on one of the local channels here [Indian Media is not well know for credible aviation stuff]
said that they sell/change their old aircrafts EVERY 5 YEARS---can anyone confirm this.

Where are they going to fly these many aircrafts

It is well known that EK plans to start direct nonstop flights DXB-GRU. The service is expected to start end-2005.

Incorrect. Their 777-200s are all older than 5 years, as are the oldest of their A330s. They also still operate one A310, which is several years older still.

Hola Andrés,

yes, Airbus still builds A340-300s - I think SAA still has some on order...
