Film:Miracle Of Flight 771

Fri Jan 21, 2005 3:29 am

This was on UK tv today, caught the end of it. At first i thought it was one of the horrendously awful US disaster movies, but the credits said it was based on a true sory.
Any threads out there that i can get more info?

The search engine gave 0 for 771

Was this the one?:

If so, it is, in fact, a true story.

It's detailed in a book I have stashed somewhere at home, a book which also contains a chapter on the BA 747 encounter with volcanic ash.

This thread reminded me to give you guys the heads up to see it, I've known since Saturday and each day forgot to do it.

I taped it, its a good film and they did stick somewhat closer to the facts - They had an extra pilot on the F/D - the real plane was a DC-10 and had an engineer so they put another guy up there on the 767. There was only one shot of a different A/C type (unlike some damn films) and at least the aircraft footage was all NZ.

This is because the movie called the flight number 771. It was actually a Cessna 188 Agwagon and the registration/callsign was N30771.

The book you are referring to is 'Emergency - crisis on the flight deck'.

The story is absolutely true. One of the crew who was part of this heroic rescue was on the ill fated NZ DC10 that impacted Mount Erebus in Antartica in 1979.

Thanks for all the replies,
Ref Memphis Belle, there was a prog on recently that dealt with the B-17 and mentioned the Belle quite a lot

Oh and just as an aside, the Smithsonian at Washington is superb!
Only had 2hrs there, before coming home, so did it a bit quick.
Well worth the effort to get there, and good views of I/a a/c as well
