Vietnam Al is in the market to lease 10 A320s (Not A321s) for 5 years beginning in June 2006.
Also are looking at more 767-300ERs , 777-200ERs , A330-200s for a 3 to 5 years period , beginning as soon as possible this year.Do not know the exact right number.

Do you want to know why Vietnam Airlines is "booming" or would you like to know the exact number of planes ordered by Vietnam Airlines?

I have very mixed feelings about Vietnam Airlines being successful. I was about 13 when my 19 year old USA Marine cousin was killed there in Dec. 1967. In September of 2004, when at the Boeing plant in Everett, there was a 777 all painted and nearing delivery for Vietnam Airlines. That they are buying Boeing a/c from the USA and Airbus, a French company (and France was their colonial occupier for about half of the 20th century) makes is difficult to hold a gruge any longer against them. Now, if they could have real representitive democracy, labor not exploited by the 1st world, that would make me feel better.

Does anybody know what additional routes they might want to serve with the new planes? They once had TXL a few years ago and they still come on charters sometimes. Berlin has a big vietnamese population.

It is good Vietnam Airlines is getting more planes and soon flying around the world to more destinations.

People can see Vietnam Airlines advertising the great and the good that is the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Nothing like a sniff of a free market to get the ball rolling.

the war was very detrimental for both countries... better to look at the future...

Now, if they could have real representitive democracy, labor not exploited by the 1st world, that would make me feel better

with the present "government", democracy won't exist
with the present "government", labor won't be yet (or hardly) exploited by main 1st world countries demand (in comparison with China)

Despite I regret the employees' selection procedure of Vietnam Airlines, it is the most "visible" Vietnamese company and becomes a significant advertising medium for the country.
The increase of the fleet and destinations will more open the country to the world and may be will bring step by step some wind of democracy...
Also let's hope the service will become as efficient and excellent as SQ or CX.

With the fastest growing economy in ASEAN, the national flag carrier will definitely be faced with rapid growth in travel demands for flights into and out of Vietnam catering to business people (the huge amount of FDI in Vietnam), tourists (Vietnam is still considered an exotic destination and the already fast growing tourist arrivals is expected to further increase year by year) and ever-increasing number of Vietnamese that can afford to travel abroad.

However, I wish VN was a better managed airline without all the conspiracy, corruption and inefficient management and be installed with long vision. Of course they are hindered due to being a state company and some would know how things really are in Vietnam anyways. Give them some more and in the next decade or so they will emerge as yet another major Asian carrier.

Airbus Lover

I also think VN will become a major Asian carrier.
Tourism is simply beginning there.
When Vietnam will be much more known worlwide , surely VN will be one of the Asian "Dragons".
I will be not surprised to see VN on the list of the A380 customers sooner than later.Difficult to evaluate when , but surely in 5-10 years time.
