US Airways Clear To Exit Bankruptcy By June!

Sun Jan 23, 2005 4:51 am

Just has an email from Bruce Lakefield! Thanking me for continuing to support US Airways through this very difficult period and they have completed all their nesscessary labour cost reductions and can now look forward!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Email goes on about how they plan to exit Chapter 11 by end of June and their future strategy.

Also offering some very good bonus dividend miles which may be worth taking up!

"Dear GILES DAVIES:
Dividend Miles #: XXXXXXX

There have been some significant accomplishments and a great deal of positive news about US Airways recently. As a valued customer, I want to take a moment to update you on our progress towards transforming our airline. Additionally, I want to thank you for continuing to support us over the past few months.
US Airways has met every milestone in its efforts to restructure. With our last remaining labor agreements completed on Friday, we now have finalized the negotiation and ratification process with all of our workgroups. Additionally, our recent agreement with the Air Transportation Stabilization Board (ATSB) allows us to continue to use our cash.

What this means for customers like you is that US Airways has adequate resources and labor support to transform the airline in the many ways we have been talking about over the past year. We plan to emerge from Chapter 11 by the end of June.

One of the positive ways we are changing is the introduction of a number of new business and leisure routes. We are expanding operations at Charlotte, adding new routes from Reagan Washington National Airport, changing our scheduling practices at Philadelphia to improve reliability, adding new destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America and introducing service to Barcelona and Venice in May. Also, we continue to invest and add features on usairways.com to make finding low fares even easier.

The support and sacrifices of our employees reflects their desire to make US Airways a successful and competitive airline that offers you value, great service, and better travel options. Ultimately, all our efforts to transform are about better serving your travel needs.

The employees of US Airways have been through their share of challenges as the airline industry continues to change. But, we believe the most difficult days are behind us.

As a thank you for continuing to support us, we are pleased to offer you a special bonus for tickets purchased between now and Jan. 30, 2005. You will receive 40,000 bonus miles for flying Envoy Class, 10,000 bonus miles for flying to the Caribbean or Latin America and double miles on all other travel between now and Dec. 31, 2005. To register and for further details, click here.

We are focused on the clear skies ahead, and look forward to seeing you onboard a US Airways flight very soon.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Bruce Lakefield
President and CEO"

Nice letter. Maybe they can succeed now. Best wishes to that airline and its battered employees.

They can plan to exit from bankruptcy all they want but without about a quarter of a billion dollar investment into the company by someone they are just about finished.

Wishful thinking. The inevitable just keeps getting put off. They can't survive long-term. It's only a matter of when, I believe, now.

The letter can also be seen on thier homepage, I do agree they need to give it up. You know they will never become profitable, just think about it, they are wasting money. They need to do something about the fleet, you can't restructure without reorganizing the fleet. They won't get anywhere if they don't do something about the amount of aircraft they are operating.

What I find to be amazing is that US has gone into bankruptcy twice now, and assuming they make it out in June, UA is still under their first Bankruptcy. If US can get their house in order twice now, what is UA's problem
Where did everybody go?

This is really good news if its true. But Falcon84 hits the nail on the head.
They will never be able to get out of this unless they really change their strategy more then they have done now.

If their house was so in order, they shouldn't of had to file a second time.

US Airways still has to file their POR and that must be approved by the court. Once that is done then they can plan on an emergence from bankrupcty. Q1 and Q2 numbers will be interesting to see on just how much the $1.1 billion in labor savings will help.

Gee, expanding CLT, improving PHL for reliability (aka, reducing flights).....sounds like PR spin for WN is killing our yields in Philly

Actually, PHL sees a flight expansion similar to CLT starting in Feb. It will be around 500 departures / day in PHL.

The de-peaking of the PHL schedule will improve the flow of flights and bump up utilization of the aircraft by around 1 hour per day.

Yeaaaaaaaaah. No go ahead...keep a ton of flights in a delay prone airport. I just love how comments are made that don't use any common sense.

I think some people tend to forget that there were LCCs before Southwest showed up...AirTran, America West, and ATA. So out of the cities Southwest serves nonstop you have to take into account what cities already had service...

Southwest offers flights...
PHL - MHT, PVD, BDL, MDW, SLC, OAK, LAS, LAX, SAN, PHX, HOU, MSY, JAX, MCO, TPA, PBI, FLL

MHT, PVD, BDL...are out thanks to AirTran to BOS. MDW is out thanks to ATA already being in that market before. LAS and PHX are out thanks to America West. Then MCO, TPA, PBI, and FLL are also gone thanks to AirTran service.

So you have SLC, OAK, LAX, SAN, HOU, MSY, and JAX. Hmm...funny thing - all these cities are offered on connecting service by the existing LCCs. So in reality...US Airways also has experienced the hit to the yeilds and Southwest really isn't doing anything more than just bringing more people to the airport.

The key figure I want to see now is what the new CASM number is - sounds like its going to be quite low.

History disagrees with you, since Southwest has been in business longer than any of the other carriers you mention.

Really. I never knew that. Funny though...i think I was talking about in relation to serving PHL...not completely. Alas...I keep forgetting that sometimes you have to spell things out extremely clear for people to understand.

EA CO AS,

I do believe that Ouboy79 was referring to the available airline flights out of PHL only. However, with the recent code-share arrangement between WN and TZ for flights to/from MDW; TZ has since pulled out of PHL.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, TZ should've offered some PHL-IND flights. It's not like they weren't aware of WN coming to PHL.

I personally don't think US will survive 2005 (I hope they will, though), but can anyone give a solid enough argument to encourage people to start flying US again, given this recent bankruptcy-exit news?

I'm not talking about the pathetic and tired, "Fly US because their employees need your business!" argument, but an argument that says, based on FACT and not emotion or brand loyalty, "Here's A, B, and C why they will emerge from bankruptcy by June, thus making it safe to arrange long-term travel plans on them."

ATL, generally people choose airlines by necessity. US is either the cheapest or the fastest option for many trips. They seem to be staking their future on an excellent route structure, much like CO.

I got the Email from Lakefield too, so I now feel like a "insider"..lol.  Big grin

They've got a plan, and have the chance to implement through June if they keep the cash balance required to keep the ATSB loan at the same time.

Changes have been made, new management put in, and bookings appear to be up from what US has released so far. To add to that, the true effects of the cost-cutting has not been published or probably even realized. We'll see what happens. Just please make it the last chance!!
