Low Cost UK To IST

Are there any direct low cost flights between the London and Istanbul or will I have to go via Cologne or somewhere instead?

I don't think there are any locos from UK/Ireland that do any four hour trip, which is what IST is from London. However, fares on mainstream airlines aren't bad - £150 on TK, £157 on Swiss, £180 on BA etc.

Beware of connecting flights with loco carriers - they are not necessarily guaranteed connections so if the first plane is late, yer buggered.

Yeah, if you have to book a connecting flight then you are better to make sure you leave early and leave connection airport late.

Geoffm, U2 fly to LTN-ATH and LGW-ATH which have similar flying times compared to LON-IST flights.

Yak42, as you've already mentioned going via Germany is an option but having just looked at LON-Germany-IST flights with several LCCs the prices are quite steep.

Does anyone know why no LLC operate from UK to Turkey? Is it distance or aren't they allowed to. I would think IST would prove a very popular destination for Easyjet.

I would imagine EasyJet or Ryanair would look there in the future.

Onur Air flies non-stop from London Stansed to Istanbul.

Also, according to Onur Air's web page, they also offer flights to Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle, and Dublin.

The issue is that Turkey is not (yet) in the EU. Accordingly, an airline would have to apply to the authorities who may then turn down the application due to protecting the national airline's interest or whatever. The chances of a non-Turkish airline being granted permission to commence service or to establish a base seems remote. But if Turkey does enter the EU, and it is looking increasingly likely, then I do foresee service from IST or S.G. to numerous cities throughout Europe.

TK001: Onur Air only operates charter flights from Stansted, as well as Birmingham, Bristol etc.

I would think that distance has been the main reason why up to now no LCCs operate from UK to Turkey. As Ray Webster of easyJet once said, Athens was probably the limit for a no-frills flight from the UK. Anything over 3 - 4 hours, passengers would want something by way of frills, be it increased seat pitch, hot meals, IFE etc. It would also be difficult to get more than one rotation in a day between (say) LGW and IST and even if there were two rotations, separate crews would be needed. Go operated between Stansted and Tenerife, but this was not successful, principally due to the length of the flight (and also it operated at night).

However with Ryanair now introducing IFE and more people accepting no-frills (and legacy carriers like IB cutting frills), I think it will not be too long before we see a LCC starting flights from the UK to Istanbul.
