EMB-170/190 Overhead Bins?

Wed Jan 26, 2005 9:20 am

Does anyone know whether the overhead bins on the new EMB-170 and -190 aircraft hold roll-aboards "wheels in," or whether roll-aboards have to fit in sideways (along their length)? Thanks!

IIRC, it's wheels in. There is a ton of room in the bins on the 170, and the 190 should be no different.

I saw that cross section, TOLTommy, but wasn't sure whether the suitcase in the port side overhead bin is wheels in or longways!

I have flown a UA EMB 170 and the bins in economy could take full sized roll a board suitcases in, but only sideways. They couldn't fit them in wheels first. However in first class the bins on the side with 2 seats are enlarged and are big enough to fit a roll a board suitcase in wheels first. The bins are shaped a little differently, but almost the same size as old MD-80 and DC-9 bins.

Here is the trip report with a photo of bins:

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
