Who Is The Biggest Regional Airline?

Thu Jan 27, 2005 12:06 am

I'm not too knowledgeable about the express carriers. Is there a bigger regional than Mesa Air and their 183 plane fleet? Maybe someone has some official rankings.

Comair I believe is the largest. I think they have close to 200 planes, all CRJ I think.

Skywest is currently the largest independant regional in terms of financials. Comair is not independantly held, so it is part of DL for financials. They have 185 planes in a mixture of CRJs and EMB 120s. They are the largest because their market cap is 965M and thier revenue is $1.04Billion. That technically puts them in the category of being a major airline since the figure of 1 billion in revenue usually is viewed as the official barrier, but since they are just a regional they aren't considered major. Currently Skywest is numberswise larger than Airtran in terms of revenue and market cap, which are signs of the size of the company, but not necessarily airline operations.

I was going to guess American Eagle, also.

I had no idea Mesaba was that large. I would have thought that Mesa and Chautauqua would rank above them.

Don't forget about CO EX. They have quite a big fleet themselves:

I know for a fact that 9E is bigger than XJ in fleet size. 129 to 98 I believe are the new numbers.

Net Revenue?

Net Seat Miles?

Wholly owned?

Publicly held?

Or,

Privately Held?

I was mostly concerned with fleet size. I can't believe I forgot about American Eagle.

Cazito,

Not that I don't appreciate the list, but how come you are including non-regional airlines such as Jet Blue and Air Tran?

What is the relationship between Air Midwest and YV? It seems like that would affect YV's size as if that 183 plane figure is RJs (straight YV) alone, they've got to be bigger than OO in terms of pax.

Although Mesa is ranked 10th in regional carriers with 4.8 million customers, Mesa was ranked number one in pilot hiring in 2004. Maybe they have big plans.
