AirTran Fleet Question

Thu Jan 27, 2005 11:58 am

I was listening to my scanner tonight (go ahead, call me sick) for SEA. There was a transmission from ATC of AirTran heavy continue to hold.......

Does AirTran have any "heavies"? I thought they had 717, 737 and A320s. I don't see any heavies in that list.

Any guesses? Just in case of what you are thinking, I heard it again when they were allowed to takeoff. Just curious.

Could you have heard AmTran? They fly heavies - L-1011 on charter flights and 57s on scheduled ops.

IIRC the 757-300 is a heavy by ATC standards.

N317AS,

FL had A320's up until late last year wet leased (I believe that is the correct
term?) from Ryan Int'l until we got enough 73G's on strength to fly the long
range ATL-LAX, LAS, and SFO routes. Speaking of Ryan I saw one of their
MD-80's @ SEA on 1/22 parked at the S-Gates. Do you know where they
are flying to out of SEA?

The -200 is and is not a heavy. This has been discussed here in the past, and I don't remember the exact specifics but it has to do with the max gross takeoff weight of the aircraft. Some 57s fall below the threshold and as such are NOT heavy, while others are over, making those heavies.

You probably heard AmTran - we had an L10 taking off at 4.55pm today.

717-200 - the Ryan MD80's go to Bullhead.

I'll bet it was AmTran then. It was before dinner so 4:55 or so would be about right. Thanks for the input.

Let's see, we have AirTran, Air Transat, AmTram, American Trans Air (a.k.a. ATA), and the Air Train over in New York.

With all these similar names floating around (I know that American Trans Air officially changed their name to ATA a few years ago to avoid being mistaken for AirTran); the question to ask is, "What's in a name?"

Edited to add:

Back to the question at hand, FL's 100-737 plane order does include, as part of the option order, up to 10 upgrades to 738s. Whether FL will exercise that option or just stick with the 73Gs remains to be seen.
