Delta Flight Makes Emergency Landing In Greensboro

Fri Jan 28, 2005 6:35 am

GREENSBORO -- A Delta Airlines flight made an emergency landing at Piedmont Triad International Airport on Thursday after a warning light indicated a problem with or in the plane's cargo hold.

Airport officials said the flight landed safely at about 2:45 p.m. An official with Guilford County EMS said there were dozens of emergency vehicles standing by at the scene.

There were no reports of any injuries among the 176 people on board the flight.

The flight originated in Milan, Italy and was bound for Atlanta. Officials said crews were investigating the issue to decide if the plane could take off again, or if passengers would be put on other flights.

Been a while since we've seen this much action, last week we had 4 emergency landing in a span of 12 hours, all were private jets. Good to see everyone was okay though. Last I heard they said it may leave around seven. For those interested it was a 767-300

I know it's way offseason and everything, but that sounds like a pretty dreadful load factor.

It was 176, not 126. 176 on a 767 isn't bad, especially if the front cabin is full.

This flight operated with an 82% load factor today. That's not bad for midweek in late January.

Too bad I've been bogged down by work all day, otherwise I might have headed over to GSO to spot it...then again, the fact that I've gotten Delta 777s over there my past few times could dampen my enthusiasm a little, but who knows...

Glad to hear everything's fine now though. Just out of curiosity, where is the FIS at GSO, since I would think that they probably would have cleared the passengers at GSO (since they did have to deplane).

PROSA is not crazy I edited the original post that originally said 126 to the correct 176.

I wonder why they did not divert to RDU...

How did GSO do the immigration and customs?

GSO has a customs facility about two minutes from the terminal with required inspections equipment. GSO does have international service all be it cargo from Tradewinds. We lost our Canada pax service in early 2002 when Air Canada pulled out. As far as why it did not go to RDU, who knows but GSO does get quite a few widebody diverts. I believe we got a Delta 777 back around thanksgiving that is still over at TIMCO, that one was smoke in the cockpit.

Not too sure about smoke in the cockpit..never heard of it. Even if there was a smoke in the cockpit..It wouldn't sit there that long.

As a side note..I think Delta has been doing their B777 crew bunk mods/3-3-3 in coach from 2-5-2 adjustment in GSO and maybe even getting fresh paint. Those B777's that used to have the interim colors are now all gone and have the latest paint...As fars as I can tell those ship numbers that never made it to NRT have been assigned to do the trip...so this may be one of signs that Delta is serious about winning China slots because you gotta have mods to take it up there.

The 777's at GSO are in fact getting the crew mods done. No smoke in the cockpit.

How did GSO do the immigration and customs?"

ACAfan, GSO has a customs office for various cargo carriers and are capable of handling customs for any passenger carrier. This is listed in the airport data for the Southeast put out by the FAA.

As for why they didn't divert to RDU. If my memory serves me, typically when there is an emergency situation, airspace is cleared for the aircraft in question. Depending on the issue, they may have wanted to put the jet in question into an airport that had the minimal amount of service they required (ie customs, long field, etc) but also with the least amount of traffic possible.

GSO was probably one of the only choices. It also depends on where the craft was when the problem was reported. If it was over eastern NC, perhaps Norfolk or Richmond would have worked, once you move farther out, then maybe GSP or GSO.

The idea is to find the nearest suitable airport. They probably were very close when the emergency occurred. From 35,000' anything within 70+or- miles is very close.

So was the purpose of this thread really about the diversion or the load factor? And you are an editor?

I am so tired of these little side comments regarding load factors when passenger safety is the topic.

Our load factors are very well thank you.

Just like the editorial that said we were laying off 68,000 rather than 6,800, people get a rush when they are trashing something or someone.

For anyone else who might be interested, January and February are slow seasons for all types of travel, International and Domestic. So save your banal comments on load factors, we are already aware.

Heard that the passengers had to remain on board until the flight departed for ATL. Saw a TV news report that it was possibly due to customs clearances for the pax in GSO, or lack thereof. Here is a link to one article, with some additional info:

Why would DL need to change the seat config to fly to China? Even though I agree that 3-3-3 is better than 2-5-2, at least for the guy in the middle of the middle row.
