B6 To Open 10+ Flight City & Red-Eye City In '05!

Sun Jan 30, 2005 4:33 am

According to David Neeleman, JetBlue's CEO, JetBlue will reportedly open a 10+ flight city this year along with another red-eye city. He said so in the Q404 online webcast so this isn't a rumor - it's a FACT.

Also, according to Neeleman, they still have no clue where they are going to start with E190s. Therefore, I have reason to believe that this new "focus city" will be all-Airbii service when launched this year.

Any guesses? Mine are...

New Focus City: CLT, IAH, BDL, or MIA
New Red Eye City: PDX

Comments are welcome!

Probably Miami, 7 or 8 flights to JFK, couple to IAD, you get the picture.

You guys know better than I do (MAH4546 probably has the answer for this) but where does Miami International Airport have gate space?

There is plenty of gate space at MIA. Also, carriers don't own gates at MIA, MIA owns them all, so MIA is at leisure to move airlines around (although, of course, AA and MIA are in bed together, so AA does have influence). They can easily get the old ATA gate in Concourse H.

As for jetBlue at MIA, I'm keeping my fingers crossed, and I think it is very realistic. I have heard MIA will launch with three dailies to JFK and a daily to BOS initially, but that would just be the start.

Also, rumour has it to expect a big announcement from jetBlue regarding South Florida on 10 February 2005, which marks jetBlue's 5th Anniversary of FLL-JFK service. Take it with a grain of salt though, it is just a rumour (very reasonable to expect, however).

The rumor is that since February 10th is my 21st birthday Jetblue is giving me a job and letting me fly for free all day wherever I want out of FLL  Big thumbs up

New Focus City: CLT, IAH, BDL, or MIA

LMFAO, are you serious, look at what happened with B6 in ATL, CLT and IAH are both fortress hubs. No way, US will squash them and so will CO. They would be stupid to try any of those and the following cities would be stupid too. MIA WTF would they do that, they go to FLL

DFW, DTW, MSP, MEM, IAH, CLT, PHL, LAX, SFO, ORD, etc. Simple, B6 is diggin their grave if they start going into fortress hubs.

Wouldn't opening MIA and making it a focus city poach their FLL traffic?

Do you think JetBlue may look to a Midwestern or southern city to build a base of ops that could also support feed with the introduction of the 190s?

That would look like DFW to me. But I'm not tapped into the jetBlue rumor mill.

MIA WTF would they do that, they go to FLL

So what? They serve LGA/JFK, SJC/OAK, LGB/ONT, and even FLL/PBI. They have a huge customer base (2nd only to NYC) in the Miami area, so serving MIA would only further expand the options and require very minimal advertising. MIA will likely launched in 2005. In fact, that and CUN are the most likely.

just to make a counter arguement.. not sure how much weight it will carry.. but B6 did start out at JFK, which was a AA and DL domain... LAS, PHX which is WN and AM domain.. BOS, which is AA, US, DL domain.. SJU which is AA domain.. MCO which is DL, FL domain.. OAK which is WN domain.. B6 doesn't seem to matter who house they enter.. and the only one they pulled out of was ATL.. which is a REAL Megafortress of DL and FL.. the only other truely Megafortress' that I could possibly think of is DTW, IAH (funny.. the SkyTeam fortresses)

erj170 - I don't think SWA was doing transcons from OAK when B6 entered the market. Certainly not the NYC marketplace.

Not saying anything about doing transcons.. I'm just saying that B6 doesn't have a problem entering another airline's big fortress and cutting a niche for themselves.. that's all..

BTW.. there wasn't an OAK-BWI or OAK-BNA? Interesting..

If B6 comes to PDX as the Red-Eye city, that would be great for Oregon. PDX lacks direct northeast flights, besides CO's EWR flight and UA's IAD flight. It's always great to see a new airline serving anywhere (especially PDX).

My guess would be DFW!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy It would be a great midpoint to their route map that they have now. I heard from some people that B6 was in DFW the last 3 weeks looking at Term E with planners on the remodel. I wonder if they are one of the multiple carries who have expressed interest in the $22 million dollar deal. Just half of the gates would give them $11 million. PDX would be my red-eye guess.

Miami is considered a separate O&D market from Ft Lauderdale.

Sure a certain percentage of Ft Lauderdale passengers drive up from Miami, however there are still large sections of the Miami population especially ones that live to the south in places like Homestead that do not view what can be lengthy drive to Ft Lauderdale as an option.

Adding Miami service would simply strengthen JetBlue presence in Southern Florida and attract new customers to the airline. The one that needs to worry the most is American as the carrier will see yield erosion continue with JetBlue now flying directly out of one of its hubs.

In regard to rest of the country there are many many markets that are basically virgin territory and could happily absorb JetBlue's service.

LMFAO, are you serious,

Yes, I am serious.

look at what happened with B6 in ATL, CLT and IAH are both fortress hubs. No way, US will squash them and so will CO.

ATL was entered with 3 flights. JetBlue specifically said 10+ flights for their new "focus city," which would mean that they'd have much heavier marketing and therefore be able to more easily establish themselves.

Since when has US been able to squash an airline, let alone one of the healthiest ones? WN has taken BWI from US and is making severe inroads at their PHL operation. Not only that, but PIT was just recently announced. No one is scared of US, especially WN or B6.

As far as CO, I agree that they are a more formidable competitor. However, IAH lacks LCC flights to BOS, NYC or IAD, all places that B6 is likely to serve. IMO, IAH has been overlooked by many airlines. Keep in mind that WN no longer serves IAH either.

They would be stupid to try any of those and the following cities would be stupid too.

I don't think my ideas are at all stupid but are instead well though out and make perfect sense for an airline that is looking to expand.

MIA WTF would they do that, they go to FLL

1.) JetBlue's CEO has made it publicly known that they're intersted in MIA; 2.) their second largest customer base is there; 3.) the flights to FLL continue to perform extremely well despite the new additional capacity from LGA; 4.) Who doesn't want to go to Miami?

I don't mind when people disagree but please don't be rude when doing so, thanks...

A midwest city would be cool. That would be good place to start E-190 service. The midwest definitely lacks a whole lot of LCC service.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I'm a little surprised that they don't make OAK a focus city.

JetBlue stopped "announcing" focus cities. Though LGB was the only "announced" focus city, OAK is one along with FLL, BOS, and perhaps IAD depending on what happens with FlyI.

US is not in a position to squash anyone and CO runs a much, much tighter ship than does DL. Just look at their financials. CO wont go throwing up more flights at a loss just because B6 enters their market. Beyond that, they don't have FL to contend with as well.

My guess would be the following for cities being added.

CLT
GRR
IAH
PIT
MIA

Red eye city I really have no idea, have not really thought about it.

Focus city again have not thought enough to throw something out.

IAH-> 4X JFK, 2X OAK, 2X FLL, 1X BOS, 1X IAD, 1X LGB (if they pick that for
those extra slots)
ORF->3X JFK, 2X FLL, 2X OAK, 2X BOS

Cactus739..

I could be wrong.. I am just guessing something.. I just don't think that there will be any of these flights to LGB because it is currently full..

now that I think about it.. Perhaps this new city will be the 2nd West Coast hub that was rumored late last year...

xxx-JFK.. 4 flights, xxx-BOS.. 1 flight, xxx-FLL.. 2 flights.. xxx-OAK.. 2 flights, xxx-IAD.. 1 flight..

But what is the xxx???

That's what I initially thought but now I'm also thinking that RNO could be in the running. B6 has had tremendous success on its JFK-LAS flying that RNO seems to be a good possibility. However, PDX has a better chance IMO.

If it's MIA, it will hurt AA alot. I imagine it will finally push AA into developing a LCC brand like Song and Ted. It will also force AA to back back to the unions for more cost cuts. JB has just decimated AA Transcon routes and NYC-SJU yields. AA will not stand for losing MIA-NYC. I'm kinda of suprised at JB's long term strategy. How they have gone after AA/DL's routes rather than flying in new markets or the markets of weaker carriers. This was Southwest's style. Don't rock the boat. JB has ignited a sea of change at Delta. They just might get more than they bargained for.

I didn't know that there was a 2nd west coast hub rumored last year. A choice for a *first* West Coast hub could be OAK. LGB won't become a hub because of the slot restrictions.

There really is no other place B6 could make a hub on the West Coast as they serve all of the biggest cities. Now they need to go into secondary cities, such as PDX, RNO, ABQ, TUS (Tucson?), BUR, RNO, etc. If you look how B6 currently operates, they'd rather make a big operation in a metropolis (ie: NYC, BOS, DC, Miami/SoFl, LA/SoCal, SF/Bay Area), opposed to WN who has made pretty big operations out of mid-sized cities such as San Diego and Nashville.

I think it is inevitable that JetBlue will announce IAH-JFK at some point. I think CO will then actually start seriously serving IAH-JFK. But I agree that CO will declare all out war if anyone tries to seriously take them on between IAH and the northeast.

IAH would be good--except we don't have extra gate space for a focus city operation. Not to mention WN dominating HOU and CO dominating IAH. Rumour has it that CO leased the couple of extra gates in Terminal A to prevent JetBlue from coming in.

I think it will be MIA also, but eventually they will have to establish LAX.

Also, MDW is not settled as yet. City Airport Council has not given it's vote of approval for the hanger or the purchase of the gates by SWA. If ATA is gone by Sept, look for Jetblue to get 4 or 5 of their gates as the 8 gates will have to be turned back over to the city.

The problem with PDX is that the locals won't let JetBlue sublet gate and counter space from another airline, even for a single redeye flight. They insist that all airline tenants buy into not only counter and gate space, but back office space, baggage staging, etc. It makes it economically unfeasible to operate there with a small number of flights. Maybe that's changed, but until it does, you probably won't be seeing JBLU there anytime soon, unfortunately. Unless PDX is the big 10+ flight city...

I guess it would be hard for B6 to create a focus/hub out of OAK considering that there not a whole lot of gate space left there, until WN moves all of their operations to T2 when the expansion is complete. But all things considered, OAK really has never hosted a hub operation.

It must be different, seeing as HA uses DL to handle their flights from PDX.

How about FAT for red-eye. That would be different for the folks from Fresno.

The airport folk here have been talking to B6 for a long time about bringing them here to RNO- a couple of years. And yet every year still no B6 and always more WN. WN is ok for this podunk town, but id love the chance to fly B6 finally. My friend took them transcon and raved about the service.

Maybe RNO is the red eye- if they are interested in shipping folk from the East out here for the skiing, a la COs winter-only Saturday- only nonstop to EWR which is a red eye departing RNO at 10.30pm and arriving at EWR at 5.58 am. We just got a daily RNO-ATL nonstop which is pretty decent- beats doin the Elko-SLC run!

I havent seen or heard anything to suggest this though. Maybe RnoCommctr knows?

B6 in IAH......no way will not happen...for one no gate space...we will take over WN gate in the A concourse....and we have gone after the LCCs. When DH announced IAD-EWR we immediately went to hourly service b/t the two and even upgraded a numer of flights to 735s.

Well B6 already goes to TPA so I don't know if they would consider SRQ for a while.

Also maybe the redeye is RDU. I think B6 to RDU has come up at least 1 million times on A.net so maybe...
