QF Flights From LHR To MAN

Sun Jan 30, 2005 8:48 am

I am looking for an update to a previous post about Qantas flights from LHR to MAN.

Apparently QF operates(ed) Bae146s on the flight as a continuation of the Australia/Asia flights. It was suggested at the time that QF was doing this to protect their LHR slots.

Are these flights still being operated?

Are they on QF metal with QF crews?

I did a photo search for QF and MAN but there are no photos, does anyone have pics of the small flying kangaroo planes in the UK?

I think these are the famous Flightline Charters for Qantas operated by flightline aircraft / crews for QF as feeders into their LHR - Aus. services.
I believe they are still running but are apparently getting quite poor loads and so may be dropped.

An article appeared in today's Independent going some way to explain the Bae146 flight

The flights are operated by this flightline BAe 146:

Can one book a domestic itinerary on it? Or is it bound by the same for international routes/non-domestic airlines only rule?

No, the flight is only available to Qantas passengers.

The route is operated by Southend based Flightline aircraft. The aircraft currently operating I believe is G-FLTC. The aircraft are crewed by Flightline cabin crew and Pilots.

If only that article appeared last April and not just in that paper; it would have been a tad embarrassing for BA/QF if the "feeder" services attracted substantial amount of passengers (i.e. more than 50 per flight) as QF have no plans for MAN for 3 to 5 years: it might have been able to raise a case for a 2 or 3 weekly service via a European (or SIN) stopover. Unfortunately, the CAA doesn't quote the number of passengers carried though it should be possible to under "MAN-SYD" and "MAN-MEL".

The Jet2 service to LGW mentioned in that article has had better loads than those quoted.....30s and 40s with a single service attracting 50 or so passengers! Anyway, given that it's only been operating a couple of weeks, I wouldn't have thought it was too bad (though I'd like better loads by the end of the 2nd month of operation).

BA are really going to support QF coming back to MAN. Same as CX, wouldn't hold my breath or waste my money, SQ are much better airline that supports MAN. BA and their Oneworld cronies should stick to LHR, it is what they deserve.

Besides, MAN is short of gates and this 146 time waster is using up valuable property.

Why they cant just use a BA flight is just stupid. It would make a lot more sense to codeshare on the route. If QF arn't looking to operate the MAN-SYD route yet then they should just wait. I'm sure that MAN in 3-5yrs time arn't going to say no if QF want to operate the route. Although maybe BY might fly it next year as charter.
