MIA Spotting From NW36 St 09L/27R - Still OK?

Sun Jan 30, 2005 10:49 pm

Guys,i've not been back to MIA spotting since 11/2000.

I used to hang out next to 09L/27R, there was a parking area where you could pull over and spot/take photo's from,it used to get pretty busy.

I think it was NW 36th St.

Can anyone advise if that location is still good or if it has been closed off.

I'm off to FLL in feb and would like a day spotting at MIA since it's been so long.

Many thanks for any input.

There are almost no views now from NW 36th St. I'm presuming you mean the old Customs area up the road alongside Signature. That's now gone as has most of the views of the Signature ramp behind a concrete and glass wall.

The only legitimate spotting area is in the Cargo Center. From NW 36th make a left alongside UPS (Milam Dairy Rd I think!) and go across the end of the runway then make a left into the Cargo Area (NW 25th St). I think it's the 2nd or third light on Milam Dairy Rd. This will take you into the cargo area. On your left you will see the photo holes in the fence. Park in the little side street and walk back.

The alternate non-approved location is over by Eldorado furniture. This puts you close to 9R/27L and you can also see things landing on the other side of the airport, but they are difficult to read off!

BigOrange,

Many thanks for the reply.

Judging by your reply i've made an error on my runways.

If you turn left out of Eldorado and follow the road,on the right you could pull over onto a parking area that over looked a runway, which from your description is 09R/27L,is that area still good?

I used to spot/take photo's from here,Eldorado and on the other side where the biz jets stop at the small customs 'shack'.

Sorry for my confusion, hopefully you can update me again.

The lot you are referring to is closed. There are concrete barricades blocking the entrance to the parking lot. The photo holes are still in the fence, but no one is allowed in the area even if you are on foot.

The photo holes at runways 12/9L is the only real "hassle free" spot. El Dorado is a sensitive area. Sometimes you are allowed to stay, sometimes not.

If the winds necessitate traffic landing to the east, you are generally screwed. Go to FLL instead.

Mark,

Thanks for that. I'll be at FLL for a few days and fancied popping down to MIA for a days spotting, but if it's got that closed,I don't think i'll bother.

I remember my first trip to MIA back in '92,super and so easy, such a shame that things have changed.
