Potential For New Low-cost Airline On Intra-Italy

I have researched some airfares from Rome FCO to the following cities within Italy. There are three sets of fares – all the cheapest on the website from which they were obtained (see below) for a non-stop flight. The first is a one-way fare based on travelling anytime on the 1st April. The second is a day-return fare, based on travelling out before the 9am on the 1st April and returning after 6pm on that date. The third is based on departing anytime on the 1st April and returning anytime on the 8th April. The fares have been found on http://www.opodo.co.uk and are in GBP and in EUR in brackets. EUR equivilent has been obtained from http://www.xe.com/ucc. The fares stated include tax. The operating airline is also stated in brackets. I have deliberately not included prices for Venice and Verona.

The frequency and aircraft types for the top 6 airports above in terms of airfares, namely Ancona, Bolzano, Brindisi, Florence and Bologna, for 1st April:

Ancona: 4x, AT7
Bolzano: 2x, D38
Brindisi: 4x, M80
Florence: 4x, 3x 319, 1x AT7
Bologna: 3x, M80
Olbia: 4x, M80
Bari: 5x, 1x 320, 1x 321, 3x M80

So why can’t a low-cost, no frills airline operate the cost-effective ATR-72 and initially serve Ancona 5x daily; Bolzano 1x daily (midday; the 2 existing ones are early morning and late evening); Brindisi 5x daily; Florence 5x daily; and Bologna 5x daily; Olbia 5x daily; and Bari x6 daily from CIA or FCO? Beat in terms of price and, except Bolzano, frequency. Ignore slot constraints.

After those, Pisa, Rimini, Cagilari and Naples.

It would be tempting to initially compete on the ‘big ones’ from FCO, namely Milan, Turin and Genoa, but it might be rather difficult to compete on frequency and thus convenience and flexibility if not price. Those markets could come later, when you’re more secure and have a larger pool of finance.

Bologna and Florence are served by a low-cost operator called Trenitalia  Wink/being sarcastic.

Bari and Brindisi were served by Volare at some stage and I am sure they could work, Olbia could work as well although you have to take into consideration that Meridiana offers special discounted fares to residents of Sardinia and people who were born there etc. etc.

Ancona is about two and a half hours by train if I remember correctly, have taken a train from Falconara Marittima (which is just a few miles from Ancona Airport) to Rome last summer, guess again Trenitalia being Alitalia's low-cost competitor already.

Bolzano is not a huge market but low fares could work, can an AT7 operate there?

Doesn't matter about how quickly Florence and Ancona are reached by train from Rome. Look at the success of most LON-MAN air services, where the train takes about 2 hours.

Well, there are two significant differences:
1) Price. Trenitalia is way cheaper than most European rail operators, especially than in the UK.
2) Rail services are more popular in Italy than they are in the UK, the image of Trenitalia is not the best but way better than the image of UK rail operators.

But Milan is only 3.5-4 hours by train from Rome. So why is there a HUGE amount of flghts between the two cities when, as you say, the train fares are cheaper in Italy and there is a 'train culture'?

First of all Hi to all A.net members....I'm New here!


Routes like Roma-Brindisi ; Roma-Bari ; Roma-Ancona are mainly used by people that have international connection flight from FCO...so they don't really pay that much...(obviously things in summer period are much different because flights are full of people that go back to the southern parts of Italy to visit their relatives)


Routes that take you to sardegna are all discounted by the local government for it's residents ( FCO-OLB price is 39€; + tax ) so I really don't think that a LCC can really develop it's business


However Ryanair will start from the 28th of February its new intra-Italy routes:

Roma-Alghero (northwest of sardegna)
Roma-Venezia
Roma-Treviso
Roma-Verona

Guess they are starting to take over the market that Volare Group left behind after their bankrupt!

There was an AT7 low cost carrier based in CIA - Ciao Fly. Big problem is the slot restrictions at Italian airports that mean getting the scale needed to be profitable is tough.

Pearson - I like your AT7 LCC concept - for turboprops you need to ignore airport - airport pairs operated in competition with Jets. (leaves you with two routes ex Rome.)

I am a firm believer that French regional operations with bases in LYS, TLS and NTE would be much more successful. Plenty of routes to be exploited like BE in the UK and RE in Ireland. Operation of east-west routes ignore the North-South TGV network.

You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!

In my opinion the italian market needs a new low cost carrier that can provides a lot of routes after the death of Volareweb.
That's the reason i was so glad with FR announcing new domestic flights.
Nevertheless I do think that there is still space and needing for a low cost carrier with a real network; I don't know FR future intentions there, but I also think a well structured low cost could serve italy in a better way, for example really connecting Rome to Verona (VRN) and Venice (VCE) instead that connecting Rome with Brescia (VBS) and Treviso (TFS). That's the reason why I think neither a FR BGY-CIA flight would work that fine; most of the people probably want a real connection between Rome and Milan and I can tell you, it's sometimes really a trouble going from BGY to downtown Milan.
I assume it would be possible to establish a low cost flying LIN-CIA, VCE-CIA and VRN-CIA at good prices, ok maybe a bit more expensive then FR but still a good choice over AZ, AP, IG.
