What Does Y, J & P Stand For?

Wed Feb 02, 2005 3:07 pm

What does Y, J & P stand for? I know that they stand for the different classes being Economy (Y), Business (J) and First (P), but what do the letters themselves mean? Like why did they choose Y for Economy? What does it stand for?

References would be nice.

Thanks Tom

I remember TG giving an explanation once that 'P' stood for premium and used that notation for First Class. Similar the 'C' comes from Club. I'd love to be educated as to where the J and Y notations came from.

Y and M are generic, meant to denote Economy class even though the actual booking class may be something else dependent on the fare you have paid and other travel conditions.

It's usually F, J and Y, isn't it? A friend has this theory behind the letters selected:

F - because F stands for First
J - because you're Jealous of those in F
Y - whY even bother travelling!

Similar the 'C' comes from Club.

the 'C' comes from Clipper or Clipper Class. Pan Am was the first to introduce the "business Class' concept, called it Clipper Class and hence the "c".

Compare New York Air, the Airline that works for your Business

I remember hearing that Y got its start with Pan Am. Y was for Yankee class. Whether that is an urban legend or not, I do not know.

UA's C class used to be called Coneissuier (not spelled right, but you get the idea)...they still call it C class over J, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
