ANA To Order 2 773ERs & Convert 2 763s To 773ERs

Thu Feb 03, 2005 2:27 am

All Nippon will order two Boeing 777s
By Dominic Gates
Seattle Times aerospace reporter

Resisting the allure of Airbus' A380 superjumbo, Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA) signaled yesterday that it will turn to Boeing's 777 widebody for its large airplane requirements in the foreseeable future.

In a statement describing its three-year plan and future strategy, All Nippon said it will place a new order for two Boeing 777-300ERs and convert a previous order for two 767-300ERs to 777-300ERs.

The fresh order and the upgrade are worth about $660 million at list prices.

"ANA's large-type aircraft for the foreseeable future is the 777," said spokesman Tom Fredo.

The All Nippon strategic plan includes a long-term imperative to reduce its large-aircraft fleet from four to one.

Chances are that one will be the 777. All Nippon operates 26 777s, and with the new order has 18 more scheduled for delivery.

An A380 purchase remains an outside possibility in the longer term, beyond 2010, if the super-sized European jet proves successful elsewhere.

All Nippon is already committed to Boeing for its small- and medium-size jets.

The more interesting news in the article are the implications for the 767 program.

Yeah, whats gonna happen to the 767 program? Any news on future orders or the status on the tanker contract?
Pretty sad to see the 767 program shut down, although it's just a matter of time with the 787 on the way.

ANA had been the last carrier with a B767 on order for 2006. With these conversions the last B767 may roll off the line by year end.

Udo:

If that happens, then there is a serious problem for the E-10 program. Though it would nice to see the E-10 on a 787 platform, and the E-10 won't be in full production until the 787 has been produced for a couple of years.

How many E-10s are planned to be produced per month?

I think total production will be around 50 over a 10 year span from 2010 to 2020. A tanker buy would bridge that gap, so clearly the tanker purchase impacts the E-10 as well.

Surprising that ANA has not said anything about the 747Adv program, considering they have several -400s in their fleet.

ANA's future plans are to cut back on the 747.

Got a source? Just curious...with Boeing mulling the idea of a 747 ADV and ANA opting to order Boeing over Airbus...makes me wonder if ANA would entertain options for a new 747.

Regards.

Aa777jr ,

ANA openly state they want to reduce all the large widebody types to 1 aircraft. Over time the 777 fleet will,if ANA keeps to plan, replace the 767 and the 747 fleet.

And eventually, the fleet of Boeing 787s will arrive to replace 767 + older versions of 777s.

ANA is determined to be a sole Boeing operator.
With 73G replacing 320s, it will be a pretty loyal operator of Boeing a/c with the exception of Dash 8.

Got a source?

Yes. Its a document in Japanese. You can find it on their website, or I can provide a link when I get home.

The 747 ADV is a dead horse, and ANA knows that.

It's almost a certainty that the int'l 744s are headed to NCA after freighter conversions.
The domestic 744D fate will be decided in the next 6 to 7 years because of number of accummulated cycles and their replacement will be either the 773 or 787-3 depending on the construction of the fourth runway at HND set to open around 2009/10.
By 2015 there will be half-hourly 787-3 flight on trunk routes such as HND-CTS & HND-FUK instead of hourly 744D/773.
